TNoutdoors9 tested the 200gr XTP loaded from underwood ammo and got 1261 fps, .675" expansion on average and only 16.125" in penetration.

At short range is the slower loading better??

is the underwood loading only going to be as good as the slower load in longer distance shooting?

Are people getting so wrapped up in speed in the 10mm all for naught as these bullets don't seem strong enough to hold up to this speed??

Yes. This has happened with a lot of the boutique manufacturers that push bullets beyond the bullet design capabilities and don't perform as well in practice as in theory. Faster velocity deforms the bullet faster which limits penetration. For hunting with a 10mm, a 200gr XTP at 1100-1200fps is more than plenty to penetrate a whitetail's ribs and do permanent lethal damage to their vitals inside 100y if you are that accurate. Excessive velocity only increases recoil, reduces penetration, and shoots a bit flatter trajectory which really doesn't make a difference at the ranges of practical handgun hunting with the 10mm.

I handload for my 10mm for hunting and keep 175-180gr bullets at 1200-1300fps and 200gr bullets to 1100-1200fps. If my bullet is more accurate at 1100fps than 1200fps, I keep it at 1100fps.
