View Full Version : Glock 30 vs 27 as back up/off duty

Im buying a Glock 21c this week to use as my duty gun and am going to be turning in my issued G22 for a back up/off duty gun.

I was originally thinking of a G30 for ammo and mag compatibility but I kind of like the idea of having a second caliber and a smaller gun. During this last ammo shortage 40 was easier to find than 45.

I get free ammo for either so that doesn't factor in the decision.

What do you guys think?

Depends on where you will carry it ,on ya as a bug, the G27 is more compact and little bit less weight ... i have the 27 and it works great. In a good ankle holster.. my main gun is the G30SF..

I actually prefer the G27, due to it's size. I'm 5'11 205, but wouldn't be able to carry a G30 as a back up. If you're a lot bigger it may not be much of an issue to carry the G30.

The g30 will be like trying to hide an 19/23 on you while carrying you're 21. That's my duty gun itself. I can't imagine tryi g to conceal a second one at he same time. Off duty different story but on duty? Not for me. I don't even like the 27 as an on duty back up but it'd be the one I choose of the two.

I should clarify that either probably won't be carried as a BUG at work. My dept recently switched us to the dress blues uniform for all patrol so right now the only feasible at work BUG would be something like a Keltec or something like sized. None of those are authorized.

So this would mainly be an off duty gun I guess. Carried in a holster on a belt.

C-grunt,

I carry a gen4 27 as my backup. It carries it in a 10-24 holster that rides on the front of my concealable vest, under my uniform shirt. Obviously my chest stick out a little due to the pistol, but it is quickly available for either hand and nobody knows it's there. I love the 27 as a backup but wouldn't want to go any bigger.

As a back up gun, it's hard to beat the G27 size. It is significantly smaller than the G30, especially if you try to conceal it in an ankle holster.

Word on the street is 9mm is coming down the pipe for your/our department as an authorized personal purchase option. Things change everyday but take it or what it's worth. I have a personal G21 and switched my old issued G22 out for a G30. It's a great gun but still feels big on the body while concealed. A G19 may be an option if the rumors are correct, but with this chief we might just have to use 38's to go with our polyester dress blues. Nothing like going in reverse on this sinking ship.

For off duty ccw, I'd go with the 30s over the 30. The full thickness slide really does make that a big gun. Not saying that's a bad thing, I had one for awhile and it shot like butter, but it's no lightweight when it comes to carry. Realistically with your choices I'd pick the glock 27 though..

If 9mm gets authorized, the glock 26 is an amazing weapon.

If limited to those two choices, I'd be inclined to go with the G27. The 27 is more concealable as both a CCW and BUG, but can be sized up with magazines and grip extensions if needed. The G30 is big to start and stays there. If going with a G30, I'd get a G30S.

If possible, get a G19/G26.

G30s for mag compatability.

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if we started carrying billy clubs with this new chief.

If they authorize 9mm ill be getting a 19 for sure as its probably my favorite all time semi handgun.

I'll see if I can shoot my buddies 30. I have some time since they won't let me qual on the new gun until Aug4.

I like this advice. IF you go 30, or prefer .45, I'd say its hard to beat the 30S...size wise will be similar to the 19, maybe even slightly less, but is very shootable, and you can use the G21 mags.

Here is a 30S next to a 26 w/ pinky extender:

And here it is compared to a 19:

Excellent post and great points! +1 for the G30S.

I just don't see enough difference in size between the G27 and the G30 to warrant any advantage for the G27, especially if you aren't carrying it as a BUG on duty.

How is the G30S compared to a regular G30 gen 4 in the recoil/handling dept? I had a gen 3 years ago and it was a pussy cat n

IMO, you gain some "snappiness" due to reduced weight of the slide, however, the bore axis slightly lower due to the shorter height of the slide. It feels like more of a push into your hand than extra muzzle flip. Overall, probably not the best option for less experienced shooters, but for those who shoot a lot, it will likely be a bit of a surprise how easy it is to shoot.

Here is a side by side with a Gen3 30SF:

Would you throw the G36 size sights on the 30S if you wanted to switch?

Apologies for the thread jack.

I'll be honest, I don't have a great answer for this, but since the slide is essentially a G36 slide, I assume that would work. I also have heard that any of the sights that fit the 30 or 21 work as well.

OP, is there a local place with a range that's friendly where you might be able to take all three and try them out to see which you prefer.

I have a 27 and 30. The 27 is a bit smaller and lighter, but I shoot the 30 a heck of a lot better than the 27.

OP, since you operate in temperatures hotter than even ours, I can solidly recommend the G27 for off duty carry. Until a recent xds45 purchase, I carried my G27 from about May to October under light T-shirts and shorts (we live with 100+ temps most of the summer) and it conceals beautifully. With a spare G23 magazine on your offside belt or pocket, its a great deep concealment gun with awesome firepower.

I figured I'd update you guys.

I was all set on getting a 30 until I drove down to the supply bureau today.

I asked if I could get a mag pouch for my new Glock 21. They told me that because I was issued a Glock 22 that they will only issue me 40 cal equipment.

So then I ask if I can trade my Glock 22 in on a 30. Keep in mind that my department started issuing Glock 21/30s after I got hired. They told me since I was originally issued a Glock 22 I can only trade it in on a 23 or a 27.

I don't now how that makes any sort of sense but it is what it is. All the things I asked for are items they have stocked and issue to people. But because I was originally issued a Glock 22, the only issued duty weapon at the time I was hired, I have to stick with a 40.

Anyways I ended up going with a Glock 27 that had Tru Glow (no idea how that's suppose to be spelled) night sights so I guess that's cool.

Good luck with your new gun. The lack of common sense in this department is disturbing.
