Being from Ca. the AR platform wasn't always appealing to me. Mainly because for years I couldn't get one and then because of the bullet button. I definitely admired them and enjoyed shooting my friends guns.

I have a wide variety of firearms and have been shooting and reloading for quite a few years. I'm not new to firearms but I am new to the AR.

I'm a contractor and a friend of mine was doing a remodel on his home so he asked me to help. He knows that I like guns so he offered two as part of the payment for the work. One a S&W MP 15 and the other a .338 AR-30. I couldn't say no!

After receiving the AR I immediately removed the scope, rail and other accessories. I new they weren't quality pieces and wanted the rifle to be as light as possible also.

It already had the MOE stock on it so I found a MOE hand guard for it locally. I also found a few 10/20 PMags at a price higher than I wished to have paid.

From talking with the previous owner and looking at the rifle it wasn't fired much at all.

It has the SM prefix, should have a chromed bore, the carrier key is staked properly, the receiver end plate is staked but might not be as it should.

So far I've put about 620 rounds through it. Two types of Federal, some Winchester and some LC surplus that a friend gave me. It cycled every round without any issues. I've read the S&W guns are over gassed. When there is extra cash I'll most likely get an H buffer but I think it is good for now.

The rear sight only needed 4 clicks left and 4 clicks up to get a rough zero at 100 yards. The trigger is better than I thought it would be after the initial dryfiring and seems to be getting better.

It is plenty accurate for what I intend on using it for. I had a lot of fun tearing up the 100 and 200 yard ringers offhand last weekend at the local range.

It seems to handle ok given my limited experience and I'm glad I took all the junk off of it. I know there were several unneeded pounds on the front of this thing.

Even if they were quality components I still wouldn't need them anyway. I'm pretty much an average guy so I'll be using this firearm for fun of course but also some coyote hunting as well as self defense when I'm in the mountains and the deserts. Being that I live in a tight suburb it would really have to be a bad time to pull it out for home defense.

Living in Ca. takes away some of the appeal of this rifle for me and it's usefulness. I'd love to take a class and learn the proper techniques required. The bullet button sucks ...

I got the BFG VCAS because it was so highly recommended but it might not be the best for my usage ... but I also really like it! It is hard mounted right now and I was resisting QD mounts. That changed after the first cleaning at the rage when I took it apart and had to slap my forehead realizing that the sling was connected to the upper and lower. Doh!

I know that I want the front swivel attached right in front of the receiver. I think that will allow me to clear my hand from the sling when I shoulder the fire arm. I think I'll be going to the Mount N Slot low profile socket on the rear of the MOE.

To me the firearm is a tool and I don't care how it looks so I want it to be durable. I'm going to research sling mounting options more before making any decisions. At some point I'll be carrying it for miles at a time so I want it to be secure.

I've been doing a lot of reading here on the forum and really appreciate all the information that is available. I doubt I'll post much because I'm so far behind the curve but I'll be around. I've pretty much been able to answer all of my questions by using the Search function on this forum.

Hope it's ok to post a few pics ... I'm pretty stoked on this firearm and this forum.

This is how it sits right now.

welcome. i know you said that you didnt want to add bulk to the rifle. i do recommend try shooting with the scope as well if you have not done so. it does help improve accuracy quite a bit and allows you to shoot even further out.
