I have a Colt 6920 Socom with a 1:7 twist barrel. I've got a bucket of Winchester 55 gr. psp bullets and I'm wondering if any of you have reloaded for your AR with these bullets. Speer recommends keeping velocity below 2800 fps with varmint bullets and a 1:7 twist barrel. The loading data I have shows velocity between 2900 and 3100 fps. Do you think the 1:7 twist will be too much for these bullets at these velocities?
Thanks much!

The load data that lists velocities from 2900 to 3100 was probably obtained in a barrel longer than a typical AR, and probably a tighter chamber too. I have loaded similar 55 grain bullets from Hornady and they perform very well in my DDXV with 1:7 twist barrel. The load data I used lists 2949 fps, but my chronometer measures them at just over 2700. The powder was Accurate 2230 at their recommended starting load. I get 1" groups at 100 yards with iron sights, and I'm not that good of a shot. New XM193 gives me 4" groups under the same conditions.

Ok thanks, I was also a little worried about the bullets due to having lead tips rather than being solid copper jacked.

55gr JSP bullets are a mainline training load for me, shot in 1/7 guns. Most are the cannelured Hornady, but also include others. I have good luck with all.

Did the Speer reloading manual state why you should not push the bullet faster than 2800 fps in a 1:7 barrel? Is accuracy a consideration?

Commercially reloaded ammunition will shoot faster than 2800 fps. Winchester 55g PSP factory ammunition chronographs at 2980 fps at the muzzle of my duty carbine. They have to expect the cartridge to be fired through a 1:7 twist barrel, so you have to wonder why Speer suggests loading the same bullet to travel at a slower velocity.

We, my father and I, load them for plinking rounds. No problems out of my 16" 1/7.

If they are not coming apart in mid-flight, I wouldn't worry about them.

The PSP isn't the thin jacketed varmint bullet style they are referring to.
