Eotech has been cloned for awhile now. The CompM4 is disturbing.

Other than unscrupulous merchants possibly taking advantage of naive customers by promoting it as an actual Aimpoint, what's the problem with it?

Not a lot.....just precision swedish engineering that's been honed for over 30 years in some of the most rugged parts of the world as opposed to flimsical, Chinese knockoffs that are probably assembled in 10 minutes in a sweatshot somewhere...

Perhaps I was unclear ...

I was not implying that a knockoff in any way is comparable to the "real thing," but rather that I don't see a problem with another entry into the market. Some people prefer to buy cheap crap because cheap is more important to them than good. It's their prerogative, and if the market supports the demand, I don't see the problem.

Proprietary information use? Copyright infringement? Patented information theft?

I'd bet your grandmother the only resemblance is external. Pass it off as a genuine Aimpoint and with any luck the seller will host some emerging hemorrhagic fever for a week before succumbing.

Figures, another nock off from china where will it end. I must admit a pretty good fake though.

Some people like to buy good, but can't afford new, and look to the used market. Knockoffs make it hard to know what you're buying. Can you tell the difference between the real and fake from only a picture?

This could cause a bad chain of events that wasnt the merchants fault.

I have had someone buy a Eotech from me and return it a week later stating the item was unused and they just didnt like the set up and prefered something else. So I open it up and if it was in perfect shape I would do an exchange for them. (This is before I knew of the Eotech clones on the market BTW). I give it a quick glance turn it on and the "F'in" reticle is green. Needless to say I was less than happy. If I didnt catch it was a fake I could have resold the item.

Some of the reviews are just humorous. I do find it disturbing how hard it is to tell the difference between the fake and real thing.

Wow. Is there anything that can be seen in that photo that gives the non-Aimpoint away as a fake?

ETA -- I think I got it: there's no serial number and the space between the knurled portion on the attach/remove knob and the clamp that attaches to the flattop is too narrow. Did I get it?

Its all airsoft Garbage. Note the G in garbage is capitalized for emphasis.

There's a huge demand for these kind of items in China so naturally the chinese are quick to clone anything american companies come up with.

Ive been exposed to these knockoffs for many years now and i will say that i will ONLY buy my accessories and optics from reputable retailers. I will NO longer give a new retailer the benefit of the doubt and try them out. There's simply too much at stake.

rhino,
no one has an issue with a manufacturer producing a product that was originally conceived by them. But to deliberately copy someone else's Internationally Patent protected idea/product, even when it is total crap, is unethical, immoral, and illegal. Their goal and the goal of those who sell this crap is to make a fast buck at the expense of naive or ignorant customers.

mopar,
The CompM4 you bought is legitimate. That is a great price. Was it an individual who sold it or a company? Please send me a PM with an answer. I'd appreciate that.

I am not an expert by any measure... but I think that's not real by the look of the mounting base.

Check out this thread

+1

Hard to tell from pics, but the base is clearly not a match to the one on the aimpoint website. The machining looks a little rough too.

It looks just like my "bought locally from a reputable dealer" one, albiet yours is dirtier. Usually the Fakepoints have white or grey painted Aimpoint logos. Yours is the same black on black as mine, and your serial number placement and font looks just like mine.
