View Full Version : How not! To remove a URX2

rapomstage3

So my good buddy bought a Noveske nsr 13.5" rail and is very impatient to say the least. What happened in my basement last night is going to be considered blasphemy to most including myself. But... He's my friend and this is what he wanted. See if this doesn't make you cringe. BTW a local shop has the Urx wrench and would have taken it off on Tuesday. This was Saturday. Enjoy

All in all it actually turned out good because the Noveske is a breeze to install but the destruction of that Urx 2 makes me want to cry!

Are those true blue, Made in USA, "Channellock" pliers, or some knock-off Chinese brand? If someone is going to go all Neandrathal on a fine piece of American Made machining, they might as well use the very best!

I take it you knocked out the pin and snaked it out of there first...

That's $300 he could have spent on beer and ammunition. I checked the Noveske website and it looks like the wrench is $15.

I like the photos of the specialty tools he used. Does he work on M1 Carbines? I need some work done.

Is there a reason why the rail had to come off that night? I cannot imagine any.

He could have probably paid himself back the price of the NSR by selling the URX.

Oh well.

rapomstage3

It really was my buddy. I have a Mod 1 and am not a fan of the nsr. Lets not get carried away with not letting him use my space and what not. He cant be reasoned with and I did think it made for an entertaining couple of hours. Just laugh and think when you feel impatient because you keep tracking a package, this just really cant be topped.

Thats a damn shame. I've been looking for a used URX2. Those legacy KAC SR15's are rare and have increased in value. I bought mine @1750 and should have bought a bunch of them. Well, I guess that's one way to do it...

If you account for the cost of a urx wrench, he probably cost himself $135 net. He's just lucky that he didn't shred the upper receiver, or worse, damage the barrel during the process.

I try to abide by the old saying "If you don't have anything nice to say..." you know how it goes. But this is just beyond retarded. A waste of a perfectly good piece of equipment and money. What pisses me off even more is the fact that I'm trying to find a good deal for a good used URX II and would've offered him something for it. $300 buys you a good amount of ammo, a pretty decent shotgun and even a scoped hunting rifle these days.

08-26-13, 10:33
While I find senseless destruction of perfectly good parts distasteful, from a strictly financial point of view his money was already spent and out of his hands. Perhaps recouping a couple hundred wasn't on his list of 'worth it' at this time. I imagine there will come a time in the future he might look back and this and kind of wish he still had the rail or recouped the money. But if he's really on a 'now now now' schedule, it won't come up again.

Anyway, thanks for photos - kind of entertaining in a sick sort of way.

He's having a perspective failure... he might as well have soaked three $100 bills with lighter fluid and dropped a match on them. We'd all be responding the same way. It's hard for anyone to sympathize with that kind of impatience, and the waste is appalling.

KAC URX II upper - $1700 - 2000
Noveske NSR 13.5 rail - $270
Metal hacksaw - $20
Plumbers pliers - $30
Dremel tool w/kit - $70

Pictures of a grown man destroying a beautiful KAC Upper like a spastic sugared-up kid rampaging in a toy store - Priceless!

08-26-13, 13:36
Just wow.

I to have a SR15 mod.0 upper, I too had the rail removed. However I had Rainier do it and pin a Vltor gas block at the same time. They also installed a 12" DD RIS II.

I have since then assembled another 11.5" upper with a BCM HF barrel and the URXII that came on SR15, I also ground and used the set screw KAC gas block on this upper.

Since then I have removed the RISII from the SR15 upper myself at home and install a 15" SMR, awesome set up. I was able to use the RISII on yet another build.

You did it all wrong IMO. Why you would sacrifice that rail, whether you wanted it or not is beyond me. It would have sold on the EE for more than what it would have cost to have some one like rainier do, and install a PINNED gas block, which you still do not have.

Epic fail of true internet proportions, well done Sir.

Eh, flame me if you want but I don't see the big deal. That handguard is worth 300 new, not resale (plus the cost of the gunsmith removal). He really probably wasted $100-150. I've blown that on one dinner with the wife. People blow money all the time. For all we know, he brings his lunch to work every day and drives a 35mpg car. It's his rifle, his money and if he really wants the NSR on it then I'd say mission accomplished.

Would I do this to my SR-15, hell no. My eyelid would twitch for the next year...but give the guy a break.

So are you saying that the BC can't withstand such use? This is of course not what happened but you obviously understand the inner workings of a BC to know exactly what would cause such a deformation. I'm amazed at how much people have to say from there PC but in reality would just get knocked out cold if you talked about people the way you do. But go ahead compensate.

But, you are the one that decided to reveal this heinous act that occurred in your basement on the internet, no less, for the whole world to see. I feel most of the members here hold a certain reverence for well crafted firearms and their components, amongst other things in this world.

If a guy takes his '65 Shelby Cobra to the track and totals her out, well, she was destroyed doing what she was designed to do. It will be a sad occurence, and some tears may be shed. If the same guy takes her in his basement and hacks her into tiny little pieces and tosses her to the side, that is a whole other deal. While, she is his to do with what he pleases, he is still deserving of Larry Flynt's "Anal Orifice of the Month" Award, just like your friend is in this instance.
