View Full Version : What's your hobby (non firearm related)?

Failure2Stop

A recent magazine article advised individuals that professionally work with firearms to take up a hobby outside their work to aviod losing perspective.

So my question is, what are your hobbies other than firearms?

"Golf" is an unacceptable response ;) .

Engineering is my profession. Hobby #1 is firearms (guns, training and competing). Hobby #2 is guitars (acoustic and electric).

Firearms are not my career, and my kids keep me quite busy.

Can the swing-set be my hobby?

I too have been pondering this lately as work has seemed to overtake me. Have been thinking of put the money forth to get back in mountain biking. Raced them when I was in my teens and actually picked up a Factory Sponsorship from Trek but quit because it lost the fun factor. I figure now, if I can keep out of the racing, it would be a nice retreat a few times a week plus get me back in shape.

Have also thought about getting into mild off-roading and camping. My Xterra is starting to show it's age and I have been thinking of getting an H3 once I get my rifle debt out of the picture. Would be nice to get out of town on my days off and relax by the lake for a few days once a month.

When I can I work on my friends Pro Mod car.. haven`t had much time lately though. I grew up building and racing Pro cars..then I had to go to work.

It is currently the quickest and fastest turbocharged car on the planet. Went 6.17 @ 243 mph last fall. Should go quicker this year.. :)

I would definitely recommend hunting and fishing. Before I joined the military I had gotten in to bowhunting, but haven't hardly shot at all since I have been in. Hunting is great, and there is a lot of information out there that will allow you to learn and get better, and learn techniques, and "tactics". Plus when you go sight in your rifle or want to shoot clay pigeons you can get your fix. Bird hunting is lots of fun, especially if you work with dogs. Fishing well it is just awesome. Quiet and relaxing.

On a side note I also play a lot of poker, and watch football when in season. It is always a good idea to get in to a hobbie that involves physical fitness if not already active.

Programming Macs. Objective-C. Once you do it you never go back. Used to do it full time until the dot-com crash. Now a part time thing.

Reading. both fiction and non fiction.

Foreign Languages. Don't do a lot now but would like to start remembering and learning new stuff. While I speak German non-native fluently, I have taken Swedish a few semesters but only remember a few things. Would like to get that going as well as learn to speak Japanese.

Wish I had the time and money and skill to do hand-work -- wood, metal, etc. Watching them build motorcycles and stuff on TV makes me jealous ;-)

Traveling. Wife is from Japan and I lived in Germany 2x (on the economy) for a total of about 4 years. So I like to travel around Germany and Europe as well as Japan and see things, learn new cultures, new food, visit friends and family. Don't like the rides there though.

Music. If a fairy god mother gave me a wish, it would to be competent musically. I played trumpet in HS and a little in college but have not done anything serious for almost 20 years with it. Took bass guitar lessons about 13-14 years ago. Need time! Hardest thing is finding the time to practice and play.

Cook. I don't do it that often but I like to cook. Especially make up new recipes ;-)

I too did the racing thing. Got a free Marin crashed hard (broken wrist, collar bone, and fractured shoulder blade) got hurt and had to give it back. I hear you on the work thing. Work has taken over my life, I work the dogwatch and have had zero time to have a social life so chasing women is something I dream about now! I have been really thinking about breaking out my bike and upgrading some stuff. And getting back into it. Thinking about new disk brakes and a new fork. If I could possibly meet a girl that I could hang onto for more than three days that would probably help as well.

Dogs, specifically Doberman Pinschers lost two in ten months, down to one presently and she is coming along great, but its nearly puppy time. I dont know if I would call it a hobby but its what I do when I am not wearing earplugs. It was so amazing to have had two dogs which responded to hand signals while the neighbors scream at their dogs {and kids too} looking very forward to it again.
I dont train them to be aggresive just to obey its very time consuming but Dobes are naturally territorial so the aggresiveness is their hobby... and my wifes ankles {they stop when I tell 'em to} !

I hear you on the Xbox 360. I spend insane amounts of time killing computer generated bad guys. But to be honest I dont call that a hobby it's just what I do instead of wathing sitcoms & reality TV. I use to be really big into doing fantasy & heavy metal art, now a days I dont really do that much. Since realitively new to the gun & tactical scene that seems to eat up much of time. Granted not spending enough time on training & more time on reading & research. So to be honest F2S I dont really have any other hobbies.

Firearms have always been my #1 hobby, since I was about 5 years old. I carried one as a profession for a relatively short time, my wife and I have discussed going to it again, but no solid plans yet and have no time frame. Here is a list of some of my hobbies, most are past hobbies and some are going to be resurrected.

Scuba Diving
Coyote hunting (plan on this one again)
Motorcycles, last one was a CBR900RR (never again, cheated death to many times)
ATV's
Baseball (too old and slow now eh, too beat up too)
Reloading (definitely doing this one again);)
Camping/hiking
Firearm competitions(service rifle/handguns, need to get active again)
Playing/training 4 month old German Shepard:D

Would like to try sky diving, will have to go solo, wife says no way.

Reading the other posts, I feel I may be a little older than many of you. Don't play the PS2 that much anymore (I said I was older:p ) Money is tighter than it used to be as well. Hobbies have been scaled back and move along slower now.

To quote Lt. Col. Dave Grossman: "Stay in shape. Piss on golf. Real Americans go to the range. Choose a sport with cardio or survival skill benefit. If you see a cop carrying golf clubs, do one thing for me. Look him in the eye and say 'baaa!'" Plan A is the British Model. Disarm everyone. It's not working. Plan B is the Israeli Model. So the patience and balance of power and finesse that are learned in golf can not be applied to firearms? That is the way that I see it. I play golf and shoot all the time. I have a range right out my back door.

After 23 years working in a cesspool called a prison, I haven't gotten any parts that haven't been wrecked left, except maybe my right ear.....
I need surgery on both knees, lower back and left shoulder so far.
The most exercise I get is chasing the old ball and chain and on occassion I get to catch her.

So, as I prepare for my first grandchild in Sept. I am trying to get some more walking in and trying to learn not to be an absolute a** most of the time.

And I hate trying to get in touch with my feelings......what a crock of b.s.

So I read alot and build toys for grown up boys, mostly friends.

Sounds like you may have spent one too many years working at the prison, my friend. I know that is a very difficult environment that often takes a severe toll on the staff.

But, there is no need to be as hard as you sound, even if you are hardened. I have been to hell and back, and I am no one for most to mess with face to face I assure you. But, there is nothing I love more than playing almost like a care free child myself with my wonderful little 4 year old son. You can be very tough and still be a loving person, especially to those that need your affection. Of course I don't know you and don't want to over analyze, either. But you sound like you could do yourself and others a favor and ease up.

Perhaps let your grandchild open that door for you. Enjoy the time you will be fortunate enough to have. Let the child see you smile and be happy, they need that positive assurance in this scary world. It will be remembered and appreciated for years to come.

Just my humble $0.02.

Oh, and my current favorite hobby is anything I do with my son (surprise). :)

After looking at this thread, my new hobby is going to be jeeps.

My main hobby is reading, mainly history related nonfiction and tactics related stuff.

before I joined the military I did a little bit of hunting, camping, and backpacking and haven't done any(in the hobby sense) since 2001. I am now getting back into it and am trying to get my sons back into it.

Since someone else already said it, I play some PS2 - right now i am playing "Bully", which is hilarious if you've never played it.

thanks for the photos of the jeeps - I feel some inspiration coming on!

You know, I Thank You Safteyhit for pointing out that I do need to ease up.
I guess if a stranger can see that I should learn to listen to my wife and grown up children also.

I really should be lighter most of the time, problem is I just don't remember how to do that after so long. I went into the Marines straight out of high school and then this job, been so long (since 1978) that I have almost forgotten what it means to relax.

So, what's a good hobby for a broken down old fart? I mean I already get beaten down at video games, and boy do I suck on 360 games..........
I've done the coaching, and Scouts, had a blue 77 CJ-5 for years and damn near everything else a Dad does as his kids grow.

I do enjoy a mellow single malt and a macanudo wrapped cigar while reading, but I guess I need a few more outside interests.
Any helpful suggestions are willingly accepted!!!! Anybody, Buellar?

A recent magazine article advised individuals that professionally work with firearms to take up a hobby outside their work to aviod losing perspective.

So my question is, what are your hobbies other than firearms?

"Golf" is an unacceptable response ;) .
I was going to say golf. Why is it unacceptable? Like all my hobbies, I do bad and curse excessively. :D

Dogs, breeding and training dogs works pretty well for a very high strung in-law. He says that being with dogs being dogs for a lot of the day is fun and relaxing. They drive me up the wall, but I am not a dog person.

How kind your reply was, anything to help I suppose. But your time spent with with your kids in the scouts and coaching shows that your likely not so bad after all. ;)

I wish I had a good hobby to suggest, but I have my boy 4 days a week and am with him if I am not working or shooting these days.

But, NBA 2008 (for PS3 anyway) is outstanding and potentially addicting.

All are financed by my least favorite hobby...restoring & painting classic cars and street rods. Least favorite because it's become more work than fun. Takes about 6-9 months to do one.

Back to the moto-hobby: The track bike is a works Suzuki superbike; the steely-eyed rider on the grid is Mat Mladin. The bike in the first photo a Kawasaki KLR650, a dual-purpose thumper. It joins a Teutonic tourer and an American cruiser (not an HD) in the stable. There's not much the Kawi won't do, including inspire C4IGrant to ask, "You rode that how far this morning?"

Lately my only hobby outside of shooting is dumping money into the girlfriend's moneypit of a house. Who knew that a 14 year old house would need so much crap done to it? There's still another $5k+/- left to go JUST to get the house back to zero, and then the bathrooms and kitchen are all dated, and almost all of the downstairs flooring needs replaced. All told the house probably could use another $25k dumped into it.

I'm hoping for a productive hurricane season 2008. Best thing that could happen to that house is for it to blow down.

Before I got sucked into this foolishness, I used to enjoy hog hunting with my AR, riding my motorcycle (that I no longer own), cooking, reading, playing with my dog (that is now dead), drinking, political debates with friends, and video games.

EEEK! Even though I am only 22 I can recognize the wisdom in C4's post. Women are a poor investment, monetary or otherwise, in my experience, albeit limited by age though it may be. They will only cause grief in the end. And think of all the ammo you could be buying!

Guitar playing... been playing on and off almost 20 years now. Wife got me back into it two years ago. She bought me an Ibanez 'jump start' kit that included a guitar, amp, bag, and accessories.

I've since traded up to a Samick Ultramatic UM-4 and an Hughes and Kettner DFX-60 amp.

I am interested in how you set the age as 7 to go to the range. This is not a criticism at all. Just interested on how it got set to 7 versus 6 or 8 or 10.

The range I frequent has a rule that kids must be at least seven. She had to fill out her own application, read the four page safety/rules sheet and take a 25 question test (I sat with her to explain things that she didn't understand, or we had not covered at home).

Ah, OK.

My son went out with me the first time last October for an hour. He was 4.75 years old. We just go out in the boonies/desert so no official range. I was testing something out and brought along a 10-22 as well. I helped him hold it while he pulled the trigger. He knows the basic safety rules. He has been out with me once since when he was 4.9. He is no 5.25. He is not strong enough to hold up the rifle himself but likes me to help him.

One of these days I plan on getting a Crickett rifle that he will be able to use in a year or three. Until then, it is pulling the trigger of the one that daddy helps him hold. (Basically he is holding it but the length is such that it goes over his shoulder and I help him with a hand under the forearm). He has to tell me the basic safety rules each time before he gets his turn.

He likes having his own safety glasses and ear muffs (Peltor junior)

Thanks. I've really enjoyed playing the Ultramatic, which incidentally is pictured below. List was about $800 I got it for $300 minus the trade in $100, so $200 to me. This sucker absolutely stays rock solid in tune and intonation!
