Like the pistol class the day before, the class was small - 5 people in total. 3 were students from the previous days VSM pistol class. There were 3 police officers a teacher and a younger shooter with plans of making the army a career upon graduation.

The class started with a safety brief, followed by carbine selection and set up. The basics - stance, mounting the weapon, safety manipulation, sight alignment/sight picture, shot placement, trigger control & follow through were discussed.

From there students started with the classic "dime drill" & some ball and dummy, followed by the 5 &1 drill.

Students then got in to follow through for 1,2,3,4 & 5 shots - From the ready position, manipulating the safety & practicing their hold overs (this was especially important as 1 student was new to AR's and most in the class had no formal training with this weapon system). Building from there, we added scan and assess.

Next, we got in to reloads, followed by malfunction clearance and transition drills for those who had a handgun (all but one student - he got extra reps on reloads, while everyone else worked transitions). After working doing multiple reps, we added in the stress of a shot timer for reloads and malfunction drills. The 2 civilians in the class (neither having any formal training) had better times then the 3 police officers (1 of the officers had even trained with Pat Rogers) and the teenage student would have smoked everyone on the "rip drill" had he remembered to do a "push pull" when he re-inserted the magazine - side note it wasn't totally his fault, he and the other civilian in the class were having trouble seating their 10 round Pmags with the bolt forward. The obvious answer if they were using 30 round mags, would be to down load to 28. Being behind "enemy lines" here in NY, that would limit them to 8 rounds in a magazine. Do to the new NY SAFEACT (read UNsafeAct), they will be limited to 7 rounds in their 10 round mags when they are not on the range anyway. But for the sake of most of the drills, they kept 10 rounds in their mags.

Barricade work came next & since everyone seemed to be doing well, we touched on shooting on the move before we closed out the day.

Do to limited range hours, we were only able to shoot from 11-4 and took a brief 30 mins or so to eat (students were advised to bring a lunch to maximize range time). We were also limited to a 25 yard range for the day. So between the compressed hours and distance, students had to come with a zero'd rifle. On a side note - 2 day classes will be shot on a 50 yard range. The small class size actually helped move things along as did the fact that the shooters were all doing a great job. Round count was right around 250 for rifle and about a magazine or so for pistol.
