Yesterday after work I drove around, locally, to look for some .22LR ammo.

Checked Wal-Mart, Dick's, few local firearm stores, and even online and not a single thing.

I have absolutely no trouble at all finding .223/5.56, and AK (7.62x39) ammo is even easier to get my hands on.

Are people still buying up .22LR like lunatics or is there really a massive shortage? Or is it something else?

I have not seen any .22LR on the shelf in Texas since "Pre-Sandy Hook". However, it can still be found on the internet at inflated prices. On Gunbot, as of this morning. http://gunbot.net/ammo/22lr

It sucks pretty bad. Academy had 9mm, 556, 308, and no .22lr.

Welcome to the last eight months. Since it is relatively cheap to shoot and non-reloadable, 22 is getting hard to find for cheap. I see it crop up at local stores every now and then.

Indeed, I am wondering if you are just now noticing this; than perhaps your stash is finally running thin.

I purchased a 15-22 just days after Sandy Hook thinking that I could economically practice until the aftershocks wore off; slight mis-calculation on my part. Fortunately I have quite a bit of 22lr; though I shoot my .223/5.56 more ironically.

I saw several boxes of Winchester 333 at the regional super store chain for the first time in months.

The entire pistol ammo shelf was still clear.

.22lr is still hard to find around here. Seems to be running at about ten cents a round on the low end and have seen higher then fifty cents a round. One local gun store had 50 round boxes for $27.95 . I can buy .45acp for less than that thank you very much!

I have been searching for .22lr as well. Nothing where I am either, just some .410, .270, and .40s&w

I wish I could find some .22lr and 5.56 for decent prices  Makes training that much more difficult.

Local Cabelas had quite a few boxes late Saturday morning. 1 box limit. All were gone before we left. Store workers said it's coming in more frequently but still going fast.

Since you can't effectively reload 22 rimfire, most of the people I know still buy as much as is economical when given the chance. Also, I know more than a couple parents who went out and purchased a 22 of some sort ( bolt action, lever action, or AR type ) for themselves or their children and have to feed those toys. (Toys not meant as derogatory)
Finally, even though scarce, 22 rimfire is still cheaper to shoot than centerfire anything!
