View Full Version : The funniest comedy movie of all time?

Doc Safari

Most comedies suck in my book. I'm one of those people that usually thinks, "I can write better jokes than that." Most movies are just "funny silly" without being "funny haha".

Two have always left me in stitches though:

There's Something About Mary
Rat Race

I could watch either one of those over and over again.

Blazing Saddles
Airplane
Dumb and Dumber
Super Troopers
Monty Python and the Holy Grail

They just never get old.

Trailer Park Boys is my favorite TV series + two movies of all time. Funniest stuff I've ever seen by a wide margin. If you ever get a chance to see the special final episode of the series, "Say Goodnight to the Bad Guys", that is the most I've ever laughed in 40 minutes of my life!

Possibly "Young Frankenstein."

You'll never watch "Bride of Frankenstein" or "Son of Frankenstein" the same way again. My fondness for both films probably factors into my nomination.

Blazzing Saddles certainly broke ground even if it isn't as hilarious as it was on the first viewing. Almost everything Monty Python holds up well because they had a cult following when they were new.

I'd also put "Animal House" on any list.

Pretty much hate everything with Ben Stiller EXCEPT Dodgeball. That was hilarious.

Porky's

The scene with the coaches laughing at the guy having sex up stairs is hilarious. You can tell they absolutely lost it themselves.

I also love Office Space and pretty much any Mel Brooks movie, even the bad ones.

I also love Peter Sellers movies. The Party and the Pink Panther movies are a riot.

I watched one of the Pink Panther movies with my Dad (his favorite funny movies) and my French girlfriend I had in college. I didn't think I was going to be able to breathe after she said "We don't talk like that" and sounded like Peter Sellers. My Dad almost had a stroke from laughing so hard, I think.:D

4. The Princess Bride, Every time Mandy Patinkin's character uttered this, I would just crack up. Inigo Montoya: "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

I can't stand Ben Stiller's movies, other than select scenes from Zoolander. "It's Magnum! [Collective Gasp!]"

The ATF scenes from Beavis and Butthead Do America were pretty funny.

Office Space, Princess Bride, Young Frankenstein, and Cary Grant's comedies for me. Most of the movies I've found really funny are from the 50's and older.

Mentioning Cary Grant brought another classic comedy to mind- Arsenic and Old Lace

Other comedies I really liked- Nacho Libre with Jack Black. It's an odd one but that's part of it's schtick. "Chancho. When you are a man, sometimes you wear stretchy pants in your room. It's for fun."

Roger Rabbit- "I'm not bad. I'm just drawn that way..." Oh yeah

The Batman movie. Not the Hollywood blockbuster that was so horrible but the one with Adam West and Burt Ward. Unmatched 60's campy goodness. "Some days, you just can't get rid of a bomb"

[President Carter on TV]

President Carter: -high inflation. What is the solution?

[TV cuts to commercial for Luke's yard taking place in Roy's yard]

Jeff: You want the solution to inflation? Hi, friends. Marshall Lucky here for New Deal Used Cars, where we're lowering inflation not only by fighting high prices, not only by murdering high prices, but by blowing the living shit out of high prices. Yessir. Here's an example. It's a 1972 Cadillac Coupe DeVille, for sixty-two ninety-nine. That price is too high.

[shoots car]

Jeff: Yessir. Here's another one. It's a Lincoln Continental, Mark IV, 1973. It's loaded. It's got air conditioning. It's got a stereo. It's got white-wall radial tires. It's got power steering, power brakes, power seats, power windows. And a price that is just too high.

[shoots car]

Jeff: Yessir.

[Jim appears on car behind him in costume]

Jim: YAAAAAAHHHH.

Freddie: [on microphone] Look out, Marshall Lucky. It's High Prices.

Jeff: Take this, you dirty ol' High Prices.

["shoots" Jim, who puts on a very convincing act]

Jim: AHHHH. Ya got me Marshall. Ahhhhh...

Jeff: [shocked] Jesus Christ.

[winks at screen]

Jeff: Yessir, that's New Deal Used Cars... Now wait just a Goddamn minute. What the hell is this? Is this a 1974 Mercedes 450SL for *twenty-four thousand dollars*? That's too ****ing high.

[blows up car with dynamite. Roy watches at home]

Roy: You sonova bitch.

Jeff: [laughs] Yessir. We blew the shit out of that over-priced mother****er just the way we blow the shit out of *all* high prices, down here at New Deal Used Cars. So y'all come on down. Did you hear what I said? New Deal Used Cars. So y'all come on down. Did you hear what I said?

No one has mentioned Bachelor Party!
Very funny movie.
And who can forget Back to School?
However, "funniest" probably depends on several interpretations or definitions; for example: raunchy, laugh-out-loud, gut-buster scenes, and their frequency, or sophisticated, witty, subtle humor are very different in type. Perhaps they should be segmented into categories.
Few films have as many blow-your-soda-through-your-nose laughs as Dumb and Dumber. Bachelor Party also fits this bill. Some movies are silly and rioutously funny, but not in quite as crude or juvenile a way, such as Monthy Python and the Holy Grail--help, I'm being repressed! Fletch is also veryfunny, but not nearly as crude as Dumb and Dumber or Animal House.
Some movies also don't age well, but were great when first seen. For example, Beetle Juice really is not nearly as funny now as when I saw it in 1989 ( or thereabouts).
Others were definitely part of their time and place, but remain timeless and even funnier than when they were made--especially compared to the many horrible films of the comedy genre made more recently. Blues Brothers is funnier today than it was back then. So is The Jerk, especially because PC standards today would never have allowed it to be made--at least not in the same way.
There are different types of humor, maybe we should define "funniest" and come up with some qualifying criteria whereby we can assess a film. :p
I agree that films in the 70s and 80s are way the heck better than the trash that's just churned out now.
I must say, though, that some of my all time favorite comedy moments are from the 30s and 40s with Abbott and Costello. But I think the 80s as a whole probably stand out as the best single comedy decade ever! " Bueller, Bueller, Bueller?"
Other honorable mentions: Bowfinger, Oscar, Three Amigos, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and Something Funny Happened On The Way To The Forum.

I suspect many of those works noted are based on very generational, and perhaps regional, influences.

For me, all of my top-# comedies would center around the early SNL cast members, Dan Akroyd, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Steve Martin, and a few cast members into the mid to late 80s.

Bachelor Party!

Back to School

Fletch

Three Amigos

All great films.

Bachelor Party doesn't hold up quite as well but has enough Tawny Kitaen in her prime and other gratuitous nudity to make up the difference.

Back to School reminds me a bit of Harlem Nights with the concentrated talent in the film. Becky LeBeau (aka Bubbles) in the hot tub was just extra icing on the cake.

I think Fletch was grossly underrated. Problem is it wasn't a great comedy so much as it was a good movie with some great comedy in it.

And I agree with much of the charm of films like The Jerk, Blues Brothers, Animal House, etc. being that they had content that would never be allowed today.

It's funny but I thought Caddyshack was a lot funnier when I was a kid, with the exception of Murray and Dangerfield it really doesn't hold up as well. By the same token, as a kid I didn't get most of the Blues Brothers but now it's hilarious every time.

And while it might not make anyone's Top 10 (or even Top 25) I always loved Transylvania 6-5000. Now certainly most of the appeal is Genna Davis as the hottest vampire to come along since Hammer films, but it also has a Dumb and Dumber sense of humor if you allow yourself to go with it. Certainly not as funny as Dumb and Dumber but I still enjoy it.

Anyone remember Weird Science from 1985?

Probably my favorite of the 80s Brat Pack / John Hughes films. I never completely bought into The Breakfast Club, I thought it was as contrived as the contrivances the movie presumed to criticize. It just wasn't the enlightenment of a film like Office Space.

Sixteen Candles was a close second, and hilarious, but I just never really saw Molly Ringwald as "hot" and it bordered on a chick flick.

Weird Science might be my favorite John Hughes film and I love almost every film he ever did. They were the films that defined my generation as much as The Graduate defined that generation (sadly). I was definitely able to identify with the slightly awkward kid trying to be cool and shoot for greater things. Of course most of us can probably say that regardless of who we were in high school.

Which reminds me of another classic, Revenge of the Nerds. It's scary how much I knew every person depicted in that film. Booger was as awesome as Kenny Powers would be years later. And plenty of prime T&A definitely helped the film.

Tom Hanks and Shelly Long buy the incredible house for pennies on the dollar only to find out it's falling apart.
Not the whole movie, but a couple scenes where I nearly choked watching Hanks.
Scene where Hanks gets attacked by bees as seen through the window is hysterical as is his reaction to the bathtub falling throught the floor to shatter into a million pieces.

In no particular order- these are the funniest to me:

-Young Frankenstein
-Caddy Shack
-Slapshot
-Dr. Strangelove or: how I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb
-Kingpin
-Monty Python and the Holy Grail
-Strange brew
-The Jerk
-Animal House
-Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
-Airplane!
-Life of Brian
-The Big Lebowski

If I had to chose the funniest of the bunch; it would be really hard to decide between Young Frankenstein and Dr. Strangelove for the #1 spot.

That would make a killer dusk till dawn lineup . . . a couple of nights in a row. :)

Indeed. One of the best.

I should have included Clue and Murder by death on my list above. Those are just brilliant!

How the hell did I forget Strange Brew. That was "milk through your nose" funny.

Also Clue was ok, but it got bonus points for Colleen Camp in a french maid outfit. I've always had a thing for Colleen Camp ever since she played Bruce Lee's girlfriend (even though it wasn't really Bruce Lee because he died a few years prior to those scenes) in "Game of Death."

"You are in more dire need of a blowjob than any white man in history"

How can all of you forget this line from Good Morning Vietnam?

Now if you'll excuse me there are a number of movies I need to go rewatch.

I really thought The Ladykillers remake with Tom Hanks was outrageously funny and under appreciated. Same goes for Burn After Reading.

I guess I just think everything the Cohen brothers touch turns to gold.

It was funny, but hardly a contender for one of the funniest movies of all time. But speaking of Robin Williams, I'm stunned we all forgot this one.

Speaking of the Survivors, I just went and rewatched it. Hadn't seen it in years.
A very funny movie. My wife got a big kick out of the scene where Robin Williams tells his fiancé he didn't buy that Galil for him, it was for "us!"
Yes, the shootout is hilarious. "What kind of person gives cigarettes to trees!"
I think one of the best scenes is when Jerry Reed is packing to leave on a trip, and his wife comes in, worrying about him being gone all the time and whether he's having an affair. He sits her down and tells her he's a hired killer and leaves all the time to kill people, that he is "not committing adultery when he leaves, but murder." She sits there stunned for a bit and then exclaims, "oh, thank God!"

My absolute favorite scene was him explaining that it's "not an automatic weapon, it's semi automatic and automatic weapons aren't legal."

While the film was obviously intended to lampoon the survivalist movement and the firearms community, somebody was clearly on the inside.

The whole movie is classic and grossly underrated.

For TV Series I nominate 'The Job'. I think netflix has that up for stream also.

Most all of my favorites have already been named.

Young Frankenstein
Blazing Saddles
Spaceballs
Airplane 1 & 2
Major Payne
Captain Ron
The Naked Gun
Office Space
Austin Powers series
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
A Christmas Story
Christmas Vacation

Honorable mentions go to Dodgeball and Tropic Thunder. I'm not a Ben Stiller fan, but the other characters in these movies saved them from his stupidity.

I found it a refreshing surprise how little we've seen movies like The Hangover or American Pie mentioned in this thread. That's the only stuff anyone at work ever seems to talk about.
