View Full Version : Not a good day shooting

Took her out shooting today. Fired three shots then click. Took it apart and the buffer retainer and spring were sitting in the trigger assembly. It's a bushmaster carbon-15. Bushmaster is sending new parts for free.

That's good that they're taking care of you, but after it gets fixed if I were you I'd distance myself as far as possible from that rifle.

Sounds like grounds for divorce.

:p Nah, I'm just giving you a hard time. At least they're sending out some parts for you. Good luck & welcome to the forum.

The buffer spring extension/tube should be screwed in to the point where it overlaps the hole the buffer retainer pin sits (but not completely over it) so at to keep it from flying out as is what happened to you.

Looks to me like the chunk of the end of your buffer extension that was doing so broke off.

When the retaining pin and spring arrive, give the receiver extension another turn on installation. Then see this thread for others things you can do to get the most out of your rifle.

You can still enjoy your rifle. Read the thread I linked to, post any additional questions you have, and we'll all help where we can.

So I sell car parts for a living and work on cars all the time. I can't leave anything alone. So I was just messing with the lower and took off the lock nut by hand. I'm guessing it should be torqued tighter than that. Cause of this the tube loosed and backed up and the pin and spring few out.

Need to have a gunsmith check your barrel nut. maybe headspace depending on how shitty their barrels are made idk

Yes, castle nut torque should be 38-42 ft-lbs

Def stake the castle nut. Also check your barrel nut and make sure it is correctlyttightened.

But according to BM and others this never happens. It's just internet rumor.

It is and your just a hater. Every Bushmaster is 100% mil-spec (but who really cares about mil-spec) and goes at least 100 rounds without a malfunction. Bushmaster is the best company to ever make anything and your just paying for the name with Colt. Bushmaster makes the rifles for the U.S. military and all the other militaries. Did I mention your a hater?

Did I miss one? I'm just kidding by the way. I'm no BM fanboy unless there's a C in the middle.

Does this seem to be a problem that people have seen? Specifically not turning the extension down one more turn? I've seen or fixed three in about the past six months with the same problem.

Is it just careless gunsmithing or do people generally just not know?

Iraqgunz

Bushmaster has been known for not properly torquing receiver extensions and then failing to stake them.

When you make mention of it, they live in Da Nile and say that it never happens except on the net.

Meh, you're just a hater :D

The three I saw were two custom builds that didn't get the extra turn and a Colt that a Bubba Basement Armorer that worked for OKC PD replaced the receiver plate and didn't give it the one more turn. And minus the torque and staking since the castle but came off with almost zero pressure on the stock wrench.

I was chalking it up to anyone throwing random parts together after December and selling at a premium. But was wondering if you might have seen more like that in your armorers class.

Iraqgunz
09-26-13, 23:12
Yes I have seen quite a few actually. Even worse are the bolt carrier key stakings or lack thereof.

Barrel nuts as well.

dalefan88, it wouldn't hurt to check this out while you're at it. Read down to the section about the rifles used.

http://www.luckygunner.com/labs/brass-vs-steel-cased-ammo/

Out of four rifles two had barrel nuts that had been torqued on to just 5 ft/lbs.

What's the buffer tube made of? Looks like more than just a "turn it one more time" issue as it looks like a chunk is taken out of the tube to me too.

If I remember on a Carbon 15 it is plastic, not to be confused with quality polymers like DNA and Magpul products.

Run it to death. Use the Bushmaster customer service to its fullest.

Think big picture - have as much fun with this as you can, and down the road you'll NEVER have to justify the cost of a quality weapon to the pretty lady again.

The Bushmaster AR15 is the anti-gunners favorite. They can ban it by name and do us all a favor. Don't hate the player, hate the game.

I'd be careful tightening that buffer tube since the whole lower is plastic...

Bushmaster is alright for an AR I've had two and it worked good,I'm sure it's no Colt or whatever is the brand of choice but for general use it's fine.

I had the carbon 15 pistol and that's why I warn you about getting too spry on tightening,I'd say the Carbon AR's are ether plinkers or hunting guns NOT something I'd get into a fight with.

Good for you OP, now list and sell it on TOS while it is still relatively new and before the receiver cracks beyond repair causing yourself more headache. Lesson learned, tell the wife to stick with tried and proven gear in the future...

Just run what you got.. if you have a LGS that has a stripped lower cheap. Pick it up to replace when/ if breaks. There is probably someone in your area to guide you swaping parts over:) You can upgrade as needed. .
At least you found this site.:D

I know I will get nailed for this. My 1st AR experience was with a bushmaster roughly 12 years ago, and that gun worked awesome. I personally put over 1200 rds through it (it was my HS buddys rifle) over a few years and he never cleaned the damn thing. That was then, and when I went to buy my 1st rifle I came here and got opinions from everyone and heard how horrible Bushmaster has become so I ran the other way.
