This is just pure bull shit, these are open air memorials! The administration had them reinstall the barracks following the 1st wave of vets hit the memorial Monday night!

New wave of WWII veterans move barricades to access DC memorial

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2013/10/02/new-wave-wwii-veterans-move-barricades-to-access-dc-memorial/

Edit: The Obama Administration has decided to block access to public memorials on the National Mall as a result of the government shutdown. Like its decision to end White House tours when the sequester cuts took effect, there is no rational reason for this. The Park Police, nominally in charge of monitoring these spaces, isn't even effected by the shutdown. Shutting off access to these sites is gratuitous and petulant.

Its politics. Show the American people how much this shutdown hurts, the way they pressure their reps never to let it happen again. Its the same thing that happens when a bureaucracy is forced to cut its budget. They dont trim the fat, they make it hurt so they can show that it cant live without the past budget. Its all bullshit.

Because they think they can. They can't get away with it forever and if they really think hauling away 80 year old vets is going to improve their public opinion, they have another thing coming. This is the start of public disobedience and if they keep throwing up fences, it will only get worse. I think they are going to cave, they are going to concede a 1 year delay on the individual mandate, and they will have egg on their faces.

Or outright open conflict, but that is no ones hope and I give it about a .002% chance of happening anyways.

That's Obama's MO. He takes extra non-necessary steps to inflict as much pain as he can then blame the Republicans. He's a scumbag who cares more about his image and ideology than the rest of us.

Belmont nailed it. In Arizona we just had a large group of people turned away from a rafting trip that cost them about 30K dollars. They won't be reimbursed and are screwed. They are blocking access to make it hurt. We don't need babysitters at our national parks and monuments. I have been to the WWII memorial and there is no reason to block access. There is nothing there that needs securing or babying.

Canceling the service academy sports games which aren't even gov funded.

It's about 'optics'. Yup. This is akin to a child having a temper tantrum.

This behavior is a clear violation of the Antideficiency Act and could be punishable by both fine AND imprisonment. But since it's just Veterans the administration is going out of their way to punish, you aren't going to get Holder's DoJ to pursue the case in a million years.

The law is no longer relevant. What further legal recourse is there? :(

Barry has such a pathological hatred for anything traditionally American that this should surprise no one.

Someone on the radio pointed out that there are more guards at the World War II memorial than there were in Benghazi.

Well...if there isn't anyone there to police it - bolt cutters.

Are you REALLY going to tell a bunch of aging WWII Vets who may never get another chance they can't go in to their own memorial?

But wait for it, the blame will be placed on the Republicans for sure...

Moose-Knuckle

So why has Barry not closed the MLK memorial, hmmm . . . .

JBecker 72

They did go to the memorial today.

Also it seems more resources are going to keeping this closed than a normal day of it open. As pointed out it is an open air memorial and you can come and go as you please.

The morning news already did. How do they have money for these guards to not let people in if they don't have guards to let people in and the gates being put up, etc?

They are also ordering parks to close that have no federal staff and receive no federal money at all. None of the past government shut downs have affected it, so it is a deliberate decision to close it to cause hardship to the most people possible.

The WW II memorial was funded with PRIVATE monies!

The shutdown didn't impact the USPP, but they are shutting down the mall! How friggin sad.

They also closed the open air C&O Canal.

What the frig is happening to this country?

Exactly what I said. A willful and blatant violation of federal law in order to further a partisan political agenda. The consequences? None at all... The rule of law is no longer in effect, so long as you're on the politically correct side. :(

Yeah, you won't in any of them unless they are shoeing the bums away. I'm going into DC tomorrow for the Caps game, and I might stop by the different monuments after and see whats fenced off and what isn't.

I fail to see where ANY PR person would tell Obama or the left that messing with the WWII vets is a great move.

Who the hell thought this was a great idea?

The optics on that one are really repulsive to most people I know.

So long as the fetid media continue to carry Obama's water and blame the Republicans for this, it will be politically advantageous. At least with the uneducated idiots of the country that is. :(

While watching the news yesterday I pondered this very thought. Aside from the lights being turned on at night and paying a guy to mow the grass once a week I fail to see what exactly all this cash is being spent on.

The site overlooking the D-Day invasion beaches is one of 24 U.S. military cemeteries overseas that have closed to visitors since Monday. Ten more cemeteries in in France, as well as others in various European countries as well as Mexico, Panama, Tunisia and the Philippines, will remain closed for the duration of the shutdown.

Question: With whom are they going to cite the offenders?

Question: These guys stormed islands, Normandy, Anzio and a half dozen other beachheads. Does the government really think a 2-lane street and a "Closed" sign will deter them?

I don't know about sickening, but what he did was wrong. Especially since he's still getting paid and all when many government employees are not.

As far as I know, all government employees are two weeks in the rear on their pay, therefore for the next two weeks they are good to go. At least that is my understanding.

Dorothy, wake up.

Obama's target audience is too busy watching Jerry Springer and talking on their Obamaphones to care about the fact that we fought a war for freedom over half a century ago.

In fact, I'd wager that this country is already so far into the toilet that a huge portion of the American public thinks the vets are the agitators.

I pray I'm wrong.

This is true, the pay on the 1st was for the previous two weeks of work. But they are on borrowed time now. And not entirely sure if the Park Police at the WWII Memorial are considered "essential personnel" or not. I know there are a lot of people that are working, but aren't getting paid right now.

But in reference to the Congressional pay, I was mistaken about the gentleman at the Memorial. He has asked his pay be withheld...not sure if it has taken or not. Anyway:

Members of Congress, meanwhile, still get their six-figure paychecks during a shutdown because the 27th Amendment prohibits any session of Congress from changing its own pay. To the members of Congress who have offered to give up their pay during the shutdown, Dougan suggests they donate their paychecks to the Federal Employees Education and Assistance Fund, a nonprofit that gives grants and no-interest loans to financially-strapped federal workers.

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-250_162-57605763/government-shutdown-is-congress-acting-selfishly/

And here's a list of the ones that have refused it so far:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-politics/wp/2013/10/01/which-lawmakers-will-refuse-their-pay-during-the-shutdown/

Some of which already donate their salaries to charity. Many of which don't need the money to start with.

Dumpster fire. That's a good term to describe what's going on right now.

Semi-related to this topic:
Some WWII vets are given a hard time because they want to visit a memorial they shed their blood for, but a rally for illegal immigrants is allowed with open arms and all the grandstanding of the democratic party...

"A planned immigration reform rally will take place on the National Mall on Tuesday even though the site is closed due to the government shutdown."
