I purchased an old Colt today and would like to see if I can get more info on it. From what I have researched, it appears to be a R6521. Below are a couple of pictures, any input is appreciated.

Looks pretty close to my 6520, minus the Colt sear block and the funky take down pin in the front.

What did you pay out the door for that Colt sweetness, if you don't mind me asking?

Looks like a Colt A2 carbine made during the Clinton years. Large front aftermarket pin.
If the stock has a "N" and a "1" under the pivot and is two position - cool.

Most Colts of that vintage do not have an N1 marked plastic stock. The stock has no markings.

These guns have a neat rollmark, but I don't consider them that great because of the large pivot pin.

Those are very uncommon. For 20 years that was the only colt preban that we could own in CT. Regardless of that fact, their rarity also drove up their value to colt collectors as not being Sporter or AR-15 marked. (CT banned colt "sporters, SP's and AR-15's by name in 1993 despite the being made here.)

The explanation I have heard the most is that they were either overrun or from never completed foreign LE or Mil sale. The numbers I have seen indicate anywhere from 600 - 900 units. I know people that own as many as 3 of them. And know of a collector with 12 of them that had connections to the factory. I have held and been offered as many as three of them all NIB or close to it. Prices ranged from $2800 to $3500. They all sold once the right buyer was found.

Neat rifle but I never understood why CT guys found them to be desireable for preban builds here. As you can tell, they have all of the period Colt deviations to make them a civilian style semi rifle. I'd rather buy a preban bushy or eagle arms receiver and fill it with Colt parts. But I do understand the collector value and desirability of the pony. Especially when told that we cannot have it.

If I think of anything else ill post later. There are probably people here more informed than I, but I spoke up because I didn't see anything posted yet.

Very interesting info, especially the CT part. Was the $2800-$3500 pricing recent or during the 94 ban or something? Seems like a lot of money for one rifle.

Also, were these ALL made with that funky factory Colt sear block?

CT residents were happily paying that money to own a pre-ban colt. However, the high price was mainly buoyed by the nation-wide market from Colt collectors due to it's unique markings and relative rarity. I think both factors contributed to it's value. Two competing markets with different motives.

In April-14 our laws changed in response to the newtown even of Dec-13. Now any AR-15 type is banned. However, the law ignores pre-bans. Half of the old law was a list of banned firearms. (Which pre-ban colts were explicitly named on). The current interpretation of the new law is that this old list of named firearms is overturned. Long story short, it looks like ALL colt pre-bans are now legal in CT. If this is the case, I would expect that at least some of the interest in the R6521 would diminish. However, it will likely still be appreciated by true colt collectors, but they tend to favor LNIB condition. I know the legal change doesn't make any sense, but gun control seldom does. At this point, if I want a colt preban, I'll get the far more common 6520 for example at half the price of a 6521

I don't know if they all have the sear block. I assume they do. However, Colt has done numerous variations and over the decades.

G19. I'm pm'ing you some specific links with info.

I hope you enjoy the rifle, or are able to make a hell of a trade with it! A few years ago I'd be making you an offer lol. But with the change in laws, I'm going to look for a SP1 in coltguard.

Edit: memory just kicked in. Those should have the old school screw type front takedown pin. That does look like a replacement, but that looks like the original upper.

Not sure on sear block.

ScottRyan is the resident Colt ID specialist. Maybe a PM to alert him of this thread? But again, colt configurations vary greatly. Especially in small batches.

I just bought one of these NIB. Still has the bore wick. The front pivot pin on mine is identical to the OPs. I didn't know how rare (or at least uncommon) the R6521 was - actually didn't know it existed. Seller had it listed as a AR-15A2 Gov't Carbine (box is serial'd but states R6520), I just figured the receiver markings were typical Colt "change as we please".

Now I have a safe queen!

I like it... I know it has the odd pivot pins, but it is a gorgeous rifle... Congrats..
