A wise person would already have these epic films in the Criteron Collection editions, along with Hidden Fortress and other Kurosawa/Mifune goodness. :D

Thanks for the heads up.

I'm sure most have seen Seven Samurai. I'd even wager a few are familiar with the Samurai Trilogy, Yojimbo and Sanjuro.

But even though I have all these and more on DVD, I've been known to watch them when they come on TCM. And with every new generation, there are those who haven't seen them yet so these are two great ones to start with.

Also here's one on DVD you might not be aware of.

Harakiri (The Criterion Collection) (1964) (http://www.amazon.com/Harakiri-Criterion-Collection-Tatsuya-Nakadai/dp/B0009WIE2A)

Be worth adding to your library, excellent film.

Cool, that is one I do not have. I'll order it.

I got 13 Assassins from Amazon a while back, but have not watched it yet.

I had the cable TV turned off a long time ago. Saves me $100 a month, and I'd rather spend it on books/DVD's anyway.

mumbling

and I told Don too, because they've moved my desk four times already this year, and I used to be over by the window, and I could see the squirrels, and they were married, but then, they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler, but I kept my Swingline stapler because it didn't bind up as much, and I kept the staples for the Swingline stapler and it's not okay because if they take my stapler then I'll set the building on fire...

since my photography background and film study background I love stuff like this
have all his stuff and watched it many times

whats interesting is if others read about his history of what he has done for all action movies moving forward the guy put so many things that are common place now into motion !!!!

truly a film genius

good to get as many watching these as you can :)

Like 13 Assassins, they recently did a remake of Harakiri. But while beautifully filmed the remake of Harakiri was butchered. The original blows it away.

Another classic you may want to explore is the 1962 version of Chushingura (The 47 Ronin story).

http://www.amazon.com/Chushingura-Y%C3%BBz%C3%B4-Kayama/dp/B000056NWP/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1381204908&sr=8-1&keywords=chushingura

Keep in mind this is probably the most popular story in Japanese film history and has been made into a film several times, but most agree that the 1962 version (starring Mifune and directed by Inagaki) is the definitive version.

Big fan, obviously.

I always wondered how Tora, Tora, Tora would have turned out if Kurosawa had remained with the project. It's easily one of my favorite films, and he definitely was a bit out of his element with a docudrama focused on recorded history.

But like Bruce Lee's "Game of Death" you wonder about how that "other version" might have been.

I dropped cable a couple months ago and TCM is one of the few channels I do miss. They have played Seven Samurai twice within the past year alone, good stuff!

Loved 13 Assassins so much i had to get the blu-ray
(yes i like the newer one but HATE dubs.. i've gotten used to subtitles)

I.P. Man was in my top 5 and netflix recommended one i had not heard of titled "War Of Arrows" now YMMV but for me War of Arrows got 5 stars.

Far too many "classic's" to list!!
I grew up with Shogun Assassin and those you could only view in the theaters before those new state of the art top loading "VHS" players were invented.

(when not sneaking into Vanishing Point, Eat My Dust, Dirty Mary & Crazy Larry, ect.... )

I assume you are aware of the Lone Wolf and Cub series "Shogun Assassin" was edited from.

If you are at all interested in the Shaw Bros. classics, nearly their entire catalog has been recently released on DVD.

This includes: The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (aka Master Killers), Heroes of the East (aka Challenge of the Ninja) and of course The 5 Deadly Venoms. These are all available in original Chinese with English language option, subtitles and widescreen format fully restored. There is some decent commentary by historical Chinese film experts except in the case of Five Deadly Venoms when they sadly let members of the rap group Wu Tang clan do the commentary.

In the similar vein of those 70's kung-fu flicks. You'll get quite the chuckle watching the "Hanzo: The Razor" trilogy. Samurai sheriff mixed in with bloody swordsmanship and soft porn. What more can you want?! :D
