Ok I'm looking to head over to OR and ID next week for some bird hunting, where could I find some cheap paper maps (land ownership/public land maps)? I'm also headed down to NM early next year for quail and need one for there too.

I have a huntingpsmaps sd card for the state I live in, but I don't want to spend $$$$ for a one week hunt.

Any suggestions?

What I would do is go to Google Earth and find the area you're looking for and zoom in/out to get the right resolution/aspect you want. Download/install the MGRS plug-in and turn it on for grid references. IMO, this system is much better than long/lat, but to each their own.

Right click the map and save as .jpg. Take the map to Kinko's and have a color print made to the size you want to use. It doesn't have to be that big to be effective.

I do this a lot for areas I don't hunt a lot or for short term hunts like yours. Hope this helps.

I know you said that you don't want to spend any money on getting maps made, but http://www.mytopo.com/index.cfm?pid=overture is where I go when I need a map. You can fully customize the map for the area you want, and they are very affordable. It's worth taking a look, anyway.

Go to http://www.oregonhuntingmap.com/ it will give you a statewide satellite map. In the box to the right click on "Land Ownership" and it will show all public and hunting accessible private land in the state.

You can also download USGS topographical maps for free from the USGS store online.

I might just spend the cash for the huntinggpsmaps "northwest region" card.

Its nice to have it in the field so theres no guessing.

Where in ID. If you are in the boise area, stop by Boise District BLM and they have topo land status maps for $5 that show public lands.

The District office is by the airport.

You can also go up Id Fish and Game website, they have a hunt planner with electronic topo maps.

Yep I'll be staying in boise and hunting the surrounding areas including the owyhees.

I'm getting in early just to pick up a license and swing by the BLM office. Thanks!

On side note my cousin ordered water-resistant map from them, very nice quality and not bad price.

Good resource, spotty for detailed info, but if you dig around you can find very useful maps

Also the Idaho BLM State Office is on Vinnell off of Overland, just West of the airport. They have maps also of all types and areas. The District office by the airport has the best supply however.

Ladies at the front desk will help you select your maps. Do stop by the f&g site. There are "Access Yes" maps available there.

It may be helpful to stop by the SW Idaho Regional Fish and Game Office in Nampa. They can help point you in the right direction also.

I'm not from the area your interested in, so I don't have any local-area-specific advice, but here's another vote for mytopo.com

No sure how much land ownership detail you need but practically every assessor has online GIS now. So if you know about where you will be via the topo or google maps, you can get exact with assessor parcel info.
