In the midst of all the current b.s. with our government and elected officials, a bunch of PJs show us what duty, honor and country is still all about.

Well done, gentlemen. Well done.

Agreed. About the only guys I'm truly comfortable with working stateside.

When they pulled over to the side of the road, they talked to a sheriff. Lucas, 48th Rescue Squadron pararescueman, identified himself as a U.S. Air Force pararescueman with seven paramedics and asked if the sheriff needed help.

“The sheriff said ‘Right now, I got three dead and five critical, help as fast as you can,’” Lucas said. “At that point, we completely unloaded both of our vehicles.”

Nice job on everyone's part. No ****ing around with liability or jurisdiction concerns or any number of stupid legal considerations that might have sidelined immediate assistance.

Great story! I had the privilege of working with them when I was on active duty. Finest medics the world over IMO!

For those old enough to recall the earthquake in San Fran where the double deck highway collapsed - PJ's from Moffet Field crawled into the pancaked bridge to aid the injured.

PJ's are routinely asked to assist in peacetime rescues all over the country on a regular basis. They even parachute onto vessels at sea when the ships have an emergency and are too far off shore for the Coasties to handle.

Do you have any link to these? Sounds like a great accomplishment.

The airmen extracted five people from vehicles, coordinated four medical helicopter flights and organized ground transportation for about six injured individuals. After the critically injured were transported off scene, the airmen collected all of their gear, ensured EMS no longer needed their services and continued back to D-M.

Like bosses.

I thought the military was not supposed to operate on U.S. soil??????

Posse Comitatus!! Posse Comitatus!!! Martial law!!

(cool story btw)

The military doesn't operate on U.S. Soil? What do you think we do on all those big ass bases that you civilians aren't allowed access to?

The actual text reads:

Sec. 15. From and after the passage of this act it shall not be lawful to employ any part of the Army of the United States, as a posse comitatus, or otherwise, for the purpose of executing the laws, except in such cases and under such circumstances as such employment of said force may be expressly authorized by the Constitution or by act of Congress ; and no money appropriated by this act shall be used to pay any of the expenses incurred in the employment of any troops in violation of this section and any person willfully violating the provisions of this section shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and on conviction thereof shall be punished by fine not exceeding ten thousand dollars or imprisonment not exceeding two years or by both such fine and imprisonment

I don't see any laws being enforced here. (Edit: I know you're being sarcastic)

The Air Force Rescue Coordination Center (AFRCC) handles federal assistance to SAR in the lower 48. Hawaii and Alaska each have their own RCC. If you "like" the AFRCC on facebook they update all the time with various missions they assist with, including the ones where PJ's or other USAF resources are mobilized.

This has some good general background and references the 1989 earthquake: http://www.pararescue.com/history.aspx?id=449

Go google A1C Pitsenbarger if you want to be really impressed. The things that 19 year old did, during fighting so intense that veterans of WWII and Korea were so frightened they cried in the fetal position... nothing short of amazing!!

Another good resource here: http://www.specialtactics.com/history.shtml A buddy of mine who is a now retired PJ runs the site.

Damn good guys, and excellent medics to boot.

I'm not surprised they did this, either.

Good on them and a good story for a change.

IIRC PJs from the 304th Pararescue Squadron are involved with SAR ops on Mount Hood from time to time.
