Cool. There was always the rumor that what came of the The Aurora Project was supposed to replace the SR 71 but I guess that never happened, unless it's currently flying but like others before it, simply not being admitted to at this time.

That is badass. Transonic up to mach6? I really want to see this T&E.

We have to find a new word for fast...

I don't see a cockpit in the pictures I have seen.

Me neither and it didn't say one way or another.

I would surmise the thing would run out of fuel before they could find it's true top speed.

Implication in the article is unmanned:

The path to the SR-72 would begin with an optionally piloted flight research vehicle (FRV), measuring around 60 ft. long and powered by a single, but full-scale, propulsion flowpath.

Optionally being the key word here.

The hell with 5th attack jets like the F35. With aircraft like this that have offensive capability, just order these by the truck load. Nothing could touch the SR71, nothing still could, with twice the speed, nothing would even remotely hope to touch this!

The problem is they outrun their munitions.

That's bad ass.

Dubbed the SR-72, the twin-engine aircraft is designed for a Mach 6 cruise, around twice the speed of its forebear, and will have the optional capability to strike targets.

Mach 6 is 3,600 MPH depending on altitude. At that speed (which I doubt it can maintain for very long but we will play along) you could fly from California to Vladivostok and back in less than 3 hours. :D

The AMRAAM's speed is only Mach 4.

Even the Soviet SA-21 Growler's speed is only Mach 5.

Literally nothing could shoot it down.

As long as the nukes stay in their tubes we can win.

Lol, that's what I thought when I read this too.

What I don't understand is why the hell are they talking about this thing? Back in the day the A-12/SR71 wasn't talked about but they want to brag about this thing that doesn't exist yet. Keep this shit quiet and let China and Russia guess about what we've got and it's capabilities. Then once it's been surpassed or outdone by more advanced tech you can start talking about it.

And why SR72 instead of SR81 or 91 since it's much more advanced?

Back when the U-2 and SR-71 were being flight tested, the western US was a bit more remote than it is now. Groom Lake was still a secret, and there was really nobody around that area in those days. Flying the SR-72 (or whatever they're eventually going to call it) is sure to be noticed by more than a few people nowadays. Now they can flight test it without having to sweat all the secrecy detals.

Transonic is at the speed of sound. Mach 6 is six times faster than that

Yes.

I know.

Lets just say this...

From less then the speed of sound, to Mach 6...

Fast...
