Rifle length handguards on a middy barrel

I'm in the process of building a 'sorta' 605; a 16" carbine with the front sight base at rifle length from the receiver. I've fit a pair of triangle rifle handguards.
The issue is a mid-barrel gas block that came with this rifle; to get the triangular guards to fit, it was necessary to trim a bit of the heatshield to fit around the block.
Question is, in semi-auto use, am I apt to damage the handguards because there's no heat shield to protect them? The plastic is a fairly tight fit, tho' I could try trimming a little beer can aluminum to give some shielding.

The heat shield is to protect your hand from heat.

If you're damaging the plastic, you have bigger problems.

The Magpul MOE have lots of clearance under the top hand guard and may be a great alternative to hacking up the stock hand guards.

I've got the MagPuls and a set of the round handguards as well; the purpose of the exercise was a 'retro' looking 605 build, so I'm trying to do it with the triangle guards.
