Economist and gun rights scholar John R. Lott also offered testimony refuting the charges that SYG laws are racist. Lott explained that in Florida, African Americans and Latinos successfully avail themselves of SYG law protections at a higher rate than whites. He also noted that those groups who are most often the victims of violent crime, including low-income African Americans, stand to benefit the most from strong self-defense laws.

This is true. A local newspaper tried to show how racist Florida's SYG law was by peppering the entire paper with pictures of every single dead criminal who had been killed by people claiming SYG. I don't know exact figures, but easily 90% of the deceased were black or hispanic.

Unfortunately for their cause, they included the names of the shooters (the people defending themselves) and a raging editorial was published slamming the newspaper because over 60% of all shooters had been minorities too.

If we want people to escape the 'hood cartel- and gang-centric lifestyle, they need to be able to defend themselves, because gangs and cartels use force just like the mob to keep control over neighborhoods. If you can't protect yourself from such thugs, how are you ever gonna get free of them?
