A viewer made up some handloads for me over the summer, and I finally got the time to make the gel to test them. The first test is of the 247gr NOE cast bullet (or "boolit" as many casters use).

The cool thing about this test was the cavetation sonoluminescence that I caught in the gel. It looks like a string of Christmas lights.

The results were otherwise quite disappointing, yet not surprising. This bullet is as stable as you're going to get, zipping straight through 32" of gel without any tumbling or expansion. Still a fun test to watch.

The second test goes to show that bullets don't have to do what they're designed to do in order to be effective. The 200gr DRT bullets are designed to fragment in tissue and create a big wound. However, they won't do this at a low velocity.

Instead, the shape of the 200gr DRT caused it to tumble in the gel, resulting in a good wound track, albeit starting a little deeper than I'd like to see. Slow this bullet down and maybe use a 1:8 twist barrel, and you might have a really good option for subsonic hunting.
