Need to remove the "dimples" on an 870...

Anyone have the Brownells tool and would be willing to "rent" it to me? I just have a hard time shelling $90 bucks out for a new one that i would use once.

Is there someone in the NOVA area that could do this for me? I know I could probably just dremel them out but would prefer to have it done correctly.

Any suggestions?

I have used a socket many times. Find the one that fits and slowly tap it down with a hammer. It works well and does not destroy the finish on the outside of the tube. I used IIRC a MAC deep well socket. I don't remember the size, it has been several years since I last used it.

I have the tool.

Sweet! See you tomorrow! What brand of +2 or +3 mag extension do you suggest?

It is easy to just drill them out and no chance of deforming the tube. 5 minutes at most including de burring the holes. I prefer Nordic tubes. Nordic tubes are modular (3 pieces). I have a 2+ tube I will make you a deal on. Not the cap and nut just the tube. GH

The factory one isn't bad but personally I like the Wilson/Scattergun one on 870s.

The factory one isn't bad but personally I like the Wilson/Scattergun one on 870s.+1, I was very impressed with mine. Good price for great quality, and even comes with sling attachment.

If you are using an Express with an Express barrel it may not have the detent ball installed on the barrel ring. Most of the mag tube extensions I've seen need the detent ball to stay snug. When I say stay snug I mean to keep the barrel properly secured in place - I would NOT use one without the detent ball installed unless the mag tube instructions stated it wasn't required.

The first one I did I drilled them and got impatient. Wound up with alot of burring on the inside and alot of dremel work. I wish I would have tried the socket method.

It's a bit easier if you keep the socket on an extention as you do the work. Five minute job, no issues.

I just picked up GG&G's mag tube extention. It uses a 3 piece design like the Nordic but theirs uses a steel nut instead of aluminum.

I have the Nordic on my Mossberg 930 and after taking it on and off the nut is starting to wear to the point that I have to run a mag clamp to keep it from unscrewing.

Thanks for posting this and it should be a sticky in the shotgun forum.

I drilled them out and then used steel wool to polish around the holes 1000 rounds later, no problems!!

I used a Dremel years ago before I knew any better. Not the best job I could have done but the gun runs great. Don't lose sleep over this operation.

I'm going to have to give this a try.
