I have three different rail systems on rifles that I own and when I'm working on rapid fire drills two free float systems have very different results. The Troy Industries rail will get hot in pretty short order. The other rifle sports a KAC free float RAS and will not get hot, even after rapid fire drills. Is this due to the Troy rail being mounted directly to the barrel nut? The KAC doesn't mount to the barrel nut, it is held in place with a separate fastener which is held in place by the barrel nut.

The Troy barrel nut has an increased surface area in direct contact with the rail compared to the free float RAS tube. Additionally, I am fairly certain the FF RAS incorporates a heat shield while the Troy does not. In any case, it really isn't anything that rail covers shouldn't fix.

Gloves are important when shooting rifles. Yes Troy does get warm. Many new rails don't have heat shields.

+1 gloves are a good idea. Check out SKD's PIG gloves or some Mechanix.

Low profile handguard = gloves.
Railed handguard = larue index clips.

My Fortis REV get's hot as hell. Or should I say the bbl get's hot as hell and the Fortis gives little or no insulating properties.

My Larue does not get hot at all...it stays cool and able to touch with bare hands. According to Larue, the way it is designed...the barrel nut setup is like a heatsink
