I have a spare Remington short action 308 bolt face laying around and wanted to barrel with a 6.5 caliber. I was thinking that the creedmoor would be a good choice for me since I do reload some but I also have the choice of buying good factory ammo as well. For my build I want the action trued, jewel trigger, stock is still undecided, and for the barrel I want a Bartlein or krieger in a Remington sender contour. Here is the kicker...... I am not sure what twist or barrel lenght. Can someone with more experience than me with the 6.5 creedmoor help? I will be shooting 140g amax mostly but will also shoot 120g occasionally, to 600 yards and maybe when I get good with that then step out to 860 or 1000 one day but mostly 600 yards. I would like to be able to squeeze 2800fps out of the 140 amax hornady factory ammo. From using quick load (which I am not very good at using yet) and from what I have read on the internet a 1n8 twist 22" barrel should get me there. What do you think? Do you think this is possible? General thoughts on the build and caliber would be nice as well. Thanks.

Bartlein 8, 5r, 22"

i would take the 5r over the T

i have a krieger, its a 26, its slower then my 24 CBI :(
but it is accurate

this is a 123amax, top left with varget, and the rest are 140 hornady BTHP with H4350

Ring, thanks for the info. How much velocity loss do you think there would be between a 26" vs a 22" barrel? Do you think that the 1 n 8 twist is more suited for the 120g bullets or 140 because it looks like the 120s shot better in you gun? What velocities are you getting? Sorry for all the questions. Lol

I think 2800 is reallllly optimistic for a 22" barrel shooting factory ammo that's only doing 2710 out of a 24" barrel according to Hornady. You can obviously handload to higher pressures, but even then I think 2800 is pushing it for a 22" barrel. I'm with taliv on the 8.5 twist barrel being fine, hell I've got a .260 barrel that's got an 8.75 twist and it shoots the 140ish grain bullets great.

My 22 CBI with 123s is 2990
My 26 Krieger is 2930

1/8 is the standard... It will shoot anything... U can go with less, but why?

Because there's no need to. At best going with a twist that's too fast is a wash. If you want to get into more detailed explanations you've got the issues of the tip of the bullet not following the arc of the flight, pressure vs. twist issues, unnecessary friction, extra spin drift, and lower velocity. Now you could argue some or all of those things are really insignificant in the real world but the fact remains they all favor using a barrel with an appropriate twist over something with way more twist than is needed.

The real question is if 8.5-8.75 works great why would you want a faster twist? What's the upside?

1/8 is what is probably going to be what i go with. Just wanted some opinions. I knew 1/8 was best for 140g pills I just don't know if 1/8.5would be better if I wanted to shoot 120g - 130g bullets?
