View Full Version : The 5inch Combat Magnum

Mr. Smith

With Bill Jordan being the driving force behind the 19 its a pure fighting gun.
Once Winchester got on bored with the 357mag history was in the making.

The 5inch Smith and Wesson 19 is possibly the most shootable revolver of all time.
One problem they did not make one and no longer produce them at all.
That dose no stop people from finding a way to get there this is my way.

1. Cut the barrel to 5 inches
2. Installed an interchangeable front sight base
3. Installed a smooth tigger
4. A new set of grips with 20 layers of hand rubbed oil
5. Installed a Bowen Rear Sight
6. Crown the barrel
7. Action work
8. Straiten the ejector rod
9. Cera-Kote it black

Beautiful. Looks great as a 5". How does the Cera-Kote hold up on the cylinder face?

Wow. More than one way to skin a cat, and you do some of the best cat skinning there is when it comes to revolvers. People with an old, used revolver laying around have no idea of its true potential. If anyone reading this has an interest in this type of work, send it to Joe. I have 6 revolvers he has done, 4 more in process, and 2 to take to him. I have put half of these through the paces, and they not only look pretty, but shoot remarkably. Not just the way they group, but the way they feel in your hand, during firing, and on your hip, is unlike any factory gun you have ever seen. Smith doesn't have a Performance Center anymore, but that is no loss if you have access to this custom gunsmith.

Oh, and he is no slouch on leverguns, 1911's, AK's, AR's, and even plastic. I'm not saying that if you have him do a revolver you will automatically want a lever gun to match, but you should consider it :)

Like I said before in our emails, I think the Model 19 turned out spectacular. I eagerly await its return, and hope to send you more work soon.

Hot DANG. Mr. Smith, you've read my mind about a project Id been thinking of, to a "T". My two favorite revolver barrel lengths are 3" & 5". Ive got access to a S&W .357 my friend bought NIB back in 77-78. It has a 8" + barrel, and has had 4 rounds thru it. I want this gun and will hopefully soon try to buy it from him. This package is EXACTY what I was wanting done to it! If you wouldn't mind, could you PM me a price with approx. wait times and any other pertinent info? Thank you so much for your posts...they are completely AWESOME.

Man, you are going to have some fun with that! I have the mental image of you deploying that pistol, raining hate on our enemies. ;)

Looks great. I just picked up a 4 inch Model 19. I have been thinking about what should be done, and I was considering having it refinished. I am curious about the cera kote. Have you done many with that finish? Hows the durability? Other than refinishing, the only other thing I "think" I would need would be action work. Would you mind sending me a PM with a general breakdown of cost on something like that?

By the way, I love your work. Looks amazing. Thanks in advance.

It dose fine.
The cylinder will be black after shooting so you can not use tan or something like that.

Excellent! I've never understood why S&W standardized on 2.5", 4" and 6" barrels, when 3" and 5" Smiths are better in every way.

The 19 is beautiful. Nice work!

I had a really nice 4" 19-3 that I stupidly sold. Now I am sorry.

I don't have my S&W book handy, but actually, I think they did make some 5" 19's. Being in the S&W Collectors Association for a long time, I've learned to never say never.

Regardless, I'm with you, the 5" barrel length just seems to work. I have probably 9 or 10 different S&W 5 inchers, both factory and custom in everything from.38 to .45 Colt. I carried a 5" M&P on duty for a while, just to be different. Problem was the lack of holsters, I ended up getting a custom Hoyt for it.

Beautiful work Mr. Smith!

I also love the S&W Model 19 and bought a 6" version in 1976. Still have it after all these years and it's in fine shape since I didn't fire the hot stuff due to the K Frame.

"What do you think of my work?"

The images on your web page show an artist who can see the spirit of something and add to it, make it better rather than killing it, ripping it out and pasting up something to replace it.
Metaphysics and machine tools, a good combination I think.

I like that revolver very much.

I like Combat Magnums and all K frames very much, but my favorite it a 5" 27-2.

the only reason for a 4" barrel is here in Florida doing Armed Security its what you must have by law. Id much rather have a 3" for carry, and/or a 5" for a fighting/duty gun myself

Very nice revolver. If I were having the work done I would prefer bluing, or hard chrome but either way that is one heck of a nice revolver.
