Hello everyone, just wanted to pick the brains of some members on here. I was installing my new Magpul furniture on my Mossberg 500 last night, and I discovered I was unable to have the barrel sit correctly due to the Heat shield. So, I set out to remove my heat shield. I really struggled not having the correct tools, and it was a major pain to remove because of the bead sight on the front. In removal of the heat shield I accidentally sheered my bead sight off. Now, I realize most aftermarket sights affix themselves on your current bead sight, but what options do I have for a front sight knowing the bead is sheered? It can be tritium (I really like the XS big dots) I just want to know what options I have to remedy this. Thanks everyone in advance.

Remove what is left of the old bead and install a new one. GH

I think some may be press fit and some threaded. My cheat sheet says that they are 5 x40 size.

If it was press fit you would need a 5x40 tap - http://www.midwayusa.com/product/912104/hanson-carbon-steel-plug-tap-5-40-thread

This would for a front sight - http://swfa.com/Truglo-Fat-Bead-Wing-Clay-Shotgun-Sight-P58975.aspx

As would this - http://www.brownells.com/shotgun-parts/sights/front-sights/tritium-shotgun-sight-prod19914.aspx

Or this - http://www.midwayusa.com/product/851584/marbles-expert-shotgun-front-bead-sight-122-diameter-5-40-thread-100-shank-ivory

Or even this - http://www.midwayusa.com/product/851584/marbles-expert-shotgun-front-bead-sight-122-diameter-5-40-thread-100-shank-ivory

And the least expensive - http://www.midwayusa.com/product/428636/mossberg-sight-bead-front-brass-mossberg-500-590-695

Hope this is of some help.

That was exactly the kind of help I was looking for here. I will make good use of this. I'm very inexperienced when it comes to most things shotguns and I was livid when I accidentally sheered that damn thing.

You could forget the bead altogether and get one of those Hi-Viz fiber optic clamp on style sights then just glue it down over the spot with the missing bead. I did that for one of my old 870 barrels and it worked fine. $15... better than a bead.. problem solved.

Which part is that?

Which part is that?

Use caution when using the tap - if you need to put threads in, make sure the barrel is oriented correctly and the tap is perfectly straight:

The other problem that I didn't mention is that the threaded shaft of the bead may protrude into the bore. This has to be filed down smooth with the inside of the barrel.

If you have a gunsmith near you, it would probably be about $20.00 to put a simple bead back on it.

The part about fing it up to start with. Take it to someone that knows what they are doing! GH

I didn't realize the bead was going to be an issue until I tried to remove the heat shield. Everything else went smoothly. Act like you've never broke something.

I think I would try to get out the stub, if you can't get it without doing more harm stop. Mossy beads are threaded 5/40, so take a #31 drill bit and drill out the stub, then tap the hole 6/48. There's lots off 6/48 shotgun beads available.

Op.....only truly this if you KNOW what you are doing. Otherwise take it to a local smith to do the work

I could be wrong, but if I remember right, a 6-48 tap will not clean up the threads from a 5-40 hole.

It won't, but it will make the hole larger and able to accept larger threaded and more easily available from sights

Just put a red dot sight on it. I put my spare aimpoint r1 on my 930 tactical because my particular barrel didn't leave me with many options. Primary arms' micro red dots have been getting good reviews if you're on a budget.
