View Full Version : 2 rifles, 2 scopes, 3 sets of mounts- what to use on what?

I just finished a 16" blackout build. I also have a pencil barrel 16" .223 carbine as a plinker/SHTF carbine. I have 2 scopes- a Nikon 223 and older Leupold VXII 2-7 compact. I have 3 mounts, a Larue LT104, the freebie Nikon rings, and some steel quick release high rise mounts (weaver?). I'm trying to determine what to put on what.

My thoughts:

maybe the 2-7 compact on the .300 blk because of it's shorter range, and possible use as a hunting rifle.
The 223 Nikon is a big scope and the turrets can easily be spun which makes me think it wouldn't be as good on the .300 if used as a hunting rifle
However...
Then there's the idea that maybe the Bullet Drop Compensation reticle in the nikon might be more handy on the .300 as it drops much more than the .223 does.

Then there are the mounts. I think I'll keep the larue on the carbine, because if the scope gets broken, it can be removed and I have troy BUIS on that rifle.

Thoughts?

the BDC of that Nikon won't work with .300 so I guess your current configuration is the best one...

Okay I put the .223 Nikon on the .223. Looks great and will be new setup. The leupold looks stupid on the blackout. Off to research a new scope for that one.

Yes. I put the P223 nikon on the .223 and I ordered a Nikon P300 for the .300 BLK. That should work just fine. The larue mount is on the .223. On the .300 I'll use the high weaver quick release rings that I have. The offset nikon rings don't work with my 3bucc brass catcher block on top of the .300. The forward ring will have to go on the hand guard rail, but .300 brass is too valuable not to run the catcher.

My next plan is to print out a "dope chart" for my loads on a small sticker and tape to the buffer tube so I know what each hold-over circle in the reticle is for.
