View Full Version : If you had to construct a Revolver battery, what would you do?

If you woke up tomorrow and all your semi-autos were gone and you couldn't get them back and had to create a handgun "battery" to cover all the things that you currently like/want to do but with revolvers. What would you get? Preferably models readily available on the new/used market. Not some ultra rare collectors item. Please feel free to use these categories or just make up your own if you prefer.

A quick browse of the S&W site would lead me to choose the model 66. Would work for all situations minus cc for me. But if all my semis disappeared I dont think I would worry about following cc laws. 38 when you want, 357 when you want.

What do you mean *create*? You young folks with those new-fangled bottom feeders. ;)

Seriously, I had to pare my revolver collection down to its essentials I suspect I could do everything I need to do with a no-dash Model 640 or 649 and a 7-shot 686-4.

Ruger LCR in 38 spl. and a Ruger GP-100 3" bbl. in 357 mag these will take care of any of my defense needs. S&W 686 with 6" bbl. for games and hunting.

Home Defense- 8 shot .357
CCW- J frame 640, or a Colt Cobra (for one more shot)
Target practice/training- The 10 shot S&W .22. We have a local USPSA club that has weekly .22 matches indoors during the winter. Shooting a .22 revolver is very satisfying.
Shooting games- S&W 625 JM. That would do for both USPSA and IDPA (ESR)
Hunting- Some variation of the Model 29 in .44 magnum. Probably a 6-8" barrel, with a red dot.
Fun- I think a Ruger Vaquero (or better yet-a pair of them) would be a lot of fun. Not the most practical, but a great thing to take to the range and just enjoy.

CCW - Ruger LCR
Serious use - S&W 686+ (7 rounder) either a 4" or 6", I'd have to shoot both to decide, but most likely the 6".
Fun - same as my only "fun gun" now, Uberti Cattleman 5.5"

Unless needed for bear protection or small game hunting, two would take care of everything needed:

3" Ruger GP100 (pre-MIM) or Security/Speed/Service Six
S&W 442 or 642 no-lock

Augment with:
Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan (.44 mag version) if bears were an issue
Older S&W .22 in the 22/32 kit gun configuration for small game

J or K with four inch barrel for training.

A 640

A 642 for concealed carry and/or BUG for those occasions where a heavier piece wouldnt work.

A three inch K-frame or two for concealed carry.

A four inch K or L general purpose revolver.

Everything in 38/357

An N-frame in 45 ACP

An N-frame in 45 Colt would be nice, but a believe the best loading if that round was back in the 19 Century when it was black powder.

Work in a Colt Diamondback in there somewhere, especially if Colt was forced to reissue them with the loss if the autos and might result in them being chambered for 357.

J Frame airweight (442 for me) for pocket/ankle and backup
617 10 shot .22LR for training/plinking/small game
3" 66-4 for CCW belt carry
4" 686 for general purpose & competition
M&P R8 for duty & HD
629 Mountain Gun for everything requiring more power than .357 Mag

A good basic battery would include a 22 LR, a 38/357, and a 44 Magnum.

I'd get a K-22 or a Ruger Single-Six for the 22. I'd get a J-frame or an SP101 AND a four-inch Model 19 or a Speed Six for carry in town, and a 4" Model 29 for carry in the woods when I'm not hunting. And I'd get a long-barreled Model 29-3 or a Ruger Bisley in 44 Magnum for hunting.

To take this from being a basic battery to an advanced battery, I'd just start buying duplicates/spares of everything listed above.

Good choices Okie John. You'll never go wrong with a Single Six and a .44 Mag is strong medicine for dangerous game, both 2 legged and 4 legged. I would go with a 4" version only because it's better balanced. A good .357 is also an excellent choice because of the ability to use either .38 or .357 ammo, my choice would be a 3" Model 65...

Everybody should own a 4 inch stainless steel 357 magnum revolver, either a 686 Smiff, of a GP100. In my book the Ruger gets the tiebreaker vote, even though I own both, and will continue to buy both. If large game is on the menu, consider adding a 6 incher. For CCW, I'd suggest either a 357 mag LCR or a 357 mag LW Smiff Centennial or Bodyguard. You can sort through the various models to see what you like.

For really big game- a Ruger Redhawk in 44 mag. Your choice of barrel length- I prefer 5-1/2 inch.

Home defense: S&W M&P R8 cause it can take a light/laser easily. Wish it had a steel frame though.

CCW: S&W 686 L-Comp 3" ported bbl, 7 shots, night sights, chopped steel frame to help soak up some recoil but small enough to conceal.

Target Practice/training/Shooting games: S&W Performance center 627 with the 5" slab sided barrel, this would also fill many roles in the shooting games category. In addition I would add a Freedom Arms M83 Silhouette in .44 Magnum and another in .22LR for pure accuracy potential.

Hunting: Freedom Arms M83 in .454 Casull (already own this one) for large and medium game, mine also has a spare cylinder in .45 ACP for maximum versatility. I would like to add a Freedom Arms M97 in .17HMR for small game at some point.

My Battery:

Home Defense: S&W 629 with 6" barrel using Buffalo Bore 190 grain 44 special at 1150 fps.
Conceal Carry: NAA 22 magnum as backup to 1911.
Target Practice: S&W 617 in 4" and 6" shooting CCI Mini-Mag.
Hunting: S&W 629 with 6" barrel using Winchester 44 Magnum 240 grain Hollow Soft Point.

I have about 2K rounds through it and I'm very happy with it. My only issue is that I wish it had the standard Ruger quick change front sight and an adjustable rear sight..... However, it seems to be regulated for 158 gr bullets (which is what I load) so it hasn't proven to be an issue. The gun points very well, is much smoother than a stock GP and handles everything I've run through it without a hitch. I was surprised how different if feels vs my standard GP100.... much more balanced. Overall it was a good purchase.

I have a bunch of revolvers, most being 44 mags, as I am a bit of a .44 nut and into long range handgunning.

These two would be in the basic battery, custom 5" Model 29-2 (which is my idea of a perfect .44 N Frame). The 5" N Frame is the perfect compromise (in my experience and opinion) between an easy packing 4" and an easy shooting 6.5". While I shoot my 6.5" 29-2 the best, the 5" seems to be the perfect balance between packing and shooting.

The 5" 29 also would serve admirably as a home defense choice. Not too many people or animals are going to take a center punch from it and have much fight left in them for long.

The Ruger Redhawk is my little Tank. Capable of handling any nuclear load I choose to shoot through it. My wrists will give out long before this hell for stout piece will.

The J Frame centennial snubby is my daily BUG at work and is still a top contender for pocket gun in spite of new offerings.

I casually talk with many unknown people at work with my left hand in my left front pocket. What they are unaware of is that I have a full firing grip on the j frame... once I determine that they are not a threat, I just slide the hand out of the pocket and conduct business.

A 4"-6" S&W 686 or Ruger GP100 in .357 will do a lot of work for you, and with the right holster can be concealed.
A 4"-6" S&W 617 (in six shot, I'm a traditionalist) or a S&W 63 with clean chambers can cover your target requirements.

Optional:
If you need a dedicated hunting gun for large/dangerous game I'd go Ruger redhawk or S&W in the .44-.50 range. I don't but you might.
For a small concealment piece I'd go J frame or Detective special.
