View Full Version : Good history of firearms?

One of the things that originally got me interested in firearms, aside from my Constitutional obligations as a citizen of this country, is their history. Yet, despite reading a myriad of stuff on specific types of arms, I have yet to find a good general history of firearms development from the very beginning (i.e., China to eastern Asia to the Mongols to the Near East to Europe, etc.). It would be nice if it was more than just a general history since I am very interested with the technical side of things.

I have seen some amazing museums with hundreds of very old firearms in Great Britain and Austria, and I want to know more!

Any suggestions?

My Uncle has a really good book. I think it was purchased from BaM. I will try and locate the name of it for you. It takes you from the beginning to fairly current with interesting details.

The Encyclopedia of Weaponry is one of the ones he has, I'll have to look for the other one

I think this fits what you are asking for pretty well. My father in law bought it for me on a whim, and it's actually pretty good. It covers from the first firearms to fairly recent designs. Not a ton of info. on each firearm, but lots of pictures and descriptions of the many different designs. Well worth the money for over 500 pages.

Do you know the author of it? I assume it's the one by Ian Hogg...

I only ask because most of these "encyclopedias" are glorified picture books.

Thank you for your help so far!
