Im certainly not new to guns but at 46, I finally bought my first 1911 today. I don't know much about them, other than ones I've shot briefly. I'm primarily a GLOCK, Sig, H&K, Kahr man.
Any words of advice concerning the 1911 to a new user? Any websites that I should check out?

Advice:
1. Find a good 1911 shooter in your area and take lessons; and/or
2. Go to a formal class with a reputable instructor on the 1911; and/or
3. Go to a local IDPA match, where you're sure to find guys who shoot the 1911 and will be more than happy to help you.

When I started shooting the 1911 I did #1 and #3, and still plan to do #2 at some point.

Practice with that safety every chance you get, but defintely take a class.

Especially if you're going to be using it for more than as a plinker.

If nothing else, you'll want to learn a proper grip. Your strong hand thumb should ride on top of the thumb safety, whether the safety is up or down.

I don't intend to carry it, too big. It's more of a house gun. Aw hell, I'll admit it...I just wanted one, really didn't need it. Wanted something different and I just thought I should have at least one 1911. My local gun pusher is friendly with me, probably because I make deposits in his account every week. He recommended Wilson magazines, so I picked up 3 to try. He said other than that, I would not need to do a thing to the gun.
True, or just his opinion?

Congrats on taking the plunge!

ONly way to know if you will have to do anything to it is to go out and shoot. Later on, you can decide if you would like to add anything to it.

For me...reliability comes first.

What brand/model did you get if you don't mind me asking?

Sorry about the pics. I'm technically challenged with photos and uploading, so heres a shot from the Kimber site. It actually looks better in person. Its a Custom Shop Stainless Steel Raptor II. Its a little "blingy" compared to what I normally buy, but I liked it. Im not sure whether to be embarrassed or proud, so no laughing if its a bit over the top. I really wanted the stainless. He said its good to go, right out of the box.

Me too. I hear the crickets so I think we're the only ones. Ha-ha. I was reluctant to post what it was when I started the thread, but I like it.

You don't need to be embarassed about anything as long as you got what you wanted.

Fine looking gun...enjoy!!!

I don't know about that. Someone wanted this:

I'm getting the feel for the thumb on top of the safety. The grip and trigger definitely feels good, but the safety is new for me. I will have to practice this until it becomes automatic.

Thanks Redhat. I have stacks of "tactical" looking weapons. Maybe I'm a little worn out on it. All are good guns, but I wanted to have something a little more along the lines of a "bar-b-q" gun, and this sure fit the bill.

Damn, Todd. Cut some slack man. It can't be as bad as that. :D
Im no expert but it seems to be a damn fine gun.

Sparks -- my comment wasn't directed at your Kimber in any way. I've seen much more blingy guns. As long as you don't treat it like a piece of art, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Oh, I don't take stuff personally. I'm just posting to hear myself talk. You couldn't hurt my feelings if you tried. Trust me.
Nope, unfortunately none of my guns get pampered. I'm pretty sure this one will scream for mercy too.
