View Full Version : Coolest Pistol You Own

Practicing some dry fire drills last night with my Glock 24, it hit me that the G24 is an incredibly "cool" gun. Almost novel in its size, so specific in its design, not the most practical, but an absolute blast to handle and shoot. I don't get anywhere near the same feeling with my Glock 35 or 22.

I have always imagined that the H&K Mark 23 would be similar, but the price tag has kept me away.

Anyone else have any pistols that fit a similar bill? A gun that when you handle just evokes this almost intangible feeling of awesomeness, despite practical downsides.

A Gen3 G17. It's cut to take G19 mags, plus it has an OEM (-) connector, a Wilson barrel, and adjustable Meprolight night sights. Roughly 8k rounds down the pipe.

I know its pretty common, but it just feels awesome in the hand - both ergonomically and the history behind it. I can't wait to upgrade it further.

My great-grandfather's top-break Smith and Wesson revolver he carried as a town Marshall in the 1880's.

It has practical downsides, but evokes awesome feelings as you said.

Not the most practical for carry, although it does happen some. The H&K P7M8 has got to be near the top of cool factor guns, at least in my arsenal.

I've got an 17L that I built from a stripped 22 frame that I feel the same way about. It had been my 3gun pistol, but I've since bought an STI Eagle 5.0 9mm CRP to fill that role. Now, the 17L is just my fun range gun, no particular role to fill. Has Dawson FO front and adj target rear, DP Ice magwell, Zev ultimate fulcrum trigger and Zev stainless guiderod.

Well not exactly a pistol, but my Freedom Arms M83 Premier grade .454 Casull is my coolest handgun. It has had a trigger job and over travel screw installed and an auxiliary cylinder in .45 ACP fitted, timed and line bored. Currently wearing a Trijicon RMR 3.25 MOA on it for sights on a Freedom Arms mount that is nicely contoured to match the top strap. For range, power levels, accuracy, and versatility of ammo I have nothing else that comes close.

Don't own a lot of pistols, but the one that I connect with and after every range session puts a smile on my face and reaffirms my decision to acquire it is this in matte stainless steel:

http://www.coltsmfg.com/Catalog/ColtPistols/ColtSeries70™.aspx

Yes it's heavy. Yes it's a 100+ year design. Yes it only has a 7-8 round capacity. Yes it needs to be tuned and maintained to get the most out of it. And yes I don't mind that a bit. Is it the best for what it's used for? Not likely, but it is by far the coolest in my mind. It's history, it's ability to put a large caliber, heavy round on target, and it's beautiful proportions, make it a classic. Yeah, John Browning was a cool cat!

Mine is a 27-3 4" and started out bright blue. I had it NITEX'ed back in the mid 80's and it still looks like a Stainless "N" frame S&W. I am most proud of this revolver. It and I have been through thick and thin in a few short years. I have been offered 800 and 1K, refusing both. It will be given to another LEO upon my passing. The action work was done by a Dallas PD gunsmith, back when they still issued revolvers. Replaced the S&W large beautiful goncalo alves, smooth finish with the Hogue Monogrip.

Built in '09, sent almost 11K downrange as of last Thursday. Still on every original part save for recoil, plunger and fp springs.

Most reliable gun I've ever owned, and I switched to this after 10 years of 9mm Glocks...

Not particularly special, just a good, solid workin' gun that is very rewarding to shoot. It's nice to be able to apply effort and actually progress, rather than stay at the same level of proficiency with a derpy trigger and blocky ergos.

I have a 1918 dated Imperial German Luger.

This pistol has all matching numbers on all of the parts, minus the magazine. The magazine has the original WWI era wooden bottom!

This pistol also wears the East German bakelite grips, was given a parkerized finish and has East German Volkspolezei markings. Surprisingly, the bore is prietine and the thing is amazingly accurate.

So basically, this Luger was built in the last year of WWI by Kaiser Wilhelm's govt factory, then used again during WWII, captured by the Russians and re-worked and used again as a police pistol in the early days of the DDR! All the while....the damn thing never had a part replaced! The Germans serial numbered everything on the early Lugers...even the firing pin and all number match.

If this pistol could talk...

So yeah...it is not the tacti-coolest thing nor is it a sexy 1911 but this old Luger has a story behind it that other guns I own just could not ever tell.

This one is my favorite. It's a Colt Super 38 Automatic that I believe was manufactured in 1931 and was originally purchased by my great-grandfather. The grips are ivory with mother-of-pearl inlay inside the initials. The longhorn head is branded/burned into one side as are the diamond shapes on the other. This thing is a work of art that my shitty cell phone pic can't capture. No rust, no scratches, nothing wrong with it at all....one original magazine.

2335923360

My dad passed it on to me last summer with instructions to get a good holster and carry it. I realize some may think that's crazy, but I'm the last of the line and will not be able to take it with me. I don't have anyone who will give a fat rat's ass about when I'm dead, so I might as well get some enjoyment out of it.

It's a tie for me between:

1. HK P7M8 - just the slick as snot awesome-est pistol ever, IMHO. Pretty well pointless for anything except punching small groups in paper and looking like a badass nowadays, but still one of my favorites
2. S&W Custom N-Frame - started life as a model 27 .357 Mag; converted to .45 Colt with a 3.5" barrel and round butt grip - has the SWEETEST DA trigger you'd ever hope to meet

Kevin

I have never shot them. They are family heirlooms that will be handed down to my two sons.

I had a Glock 24 for about a year, and of course I regret selling it. A friend from the club was selling it to buy an STI limited gun. He had stippled the frame, added a magwell and mag extention, and had the slide hydro-dipped in a carbon fiber pattern. I eventually had to sell it for school, but I felt the same way that you did. If I ever get back to shooting USPSA as much, I may get a lone wolf longslide to mimic the feel.

For me, it would be my Smith 625-7 3" in .45 Colt, one of around 170 or so, according to my research. After that my SF serial numbered Wilson railed CQB. Supposedly part of an overrun from Wilson of some pistols contracted for some military units.

Not the best condition. Most likely one of the fakes his mom made. These were both found together on a ranch in Kansas City, MO in the 1860's. They've been in the same family ever since then, until I got them. The man I got them from was 85 years old, dying of cancer, and getting his house foreclosed on. I bought ten of his other firearms and a bunch of ammo and gear before he even mentioned he had these. All of these markings were already on them when they were found. Fact or fiction, I always wanted to own a gun this old.

No one in the single family line that owned it before me ever noticed this for some reason. 1847 is the year Jesse James was born.

Two inherited pistols.

The Colt was carried on a farm by two generations over the course of 60+ years.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/09/basusu8y.jpg

The Luger was a WW II bring back. Wish it still had the original holster and detachable butt stock.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/09/ynu2y6y2.jpg

Both shoot great, but spend most of their time in the safe. Carry the Colt occasionally though, just to pay homage to its past.

OK, Here is one more. In an attempt to make a bean field gun that would be legal to shoot in lower Michigan (shotguns, muzzle loaders and straight wall pistols only) we needed to create a straight wall pistol cartridge that could sizzle. Enter the Remington XP100 470 Capstick. It's basically a 375 H&H Magnum blown out to .475 caliber. Instead of running big 500 grain bullets, it's loaded up with 325 Grain Speer Deep Curl or Hornady XTPs and lots and lots of powder

Terminal performance is insane....

It's the only pistol I know that is good past 300 yards and still legal to hunt with in southern MI. Ammo shown for comparison is 470 Capstick, 45 Long Colt, 17 Squirrel and 22LR

Honestly one of the best purchased I've made, especially as Beretta is not importing them any longer, and the new ones have all the lawyer speak on the slides.

Still, this one may be more interesting as I know where it came from. It was my grandfather's, who traded for it with a work friend of his, Florentino Ventura. A very strange way to live, and a sad way to go.

Gen 3 OD Green Glock 21 with Vickers slide stop, mag release and RB1 sights.

One of the few times I've run across a good deal and was prepared to act on it. Most of the time I realize something was a great deal after the opportunity is gone.

Picked it up new at a gun show at few years back for just under $500 before tax just before they first decided to turn off the spigot on the OD guns (they seem to have done small runs here and there since then, but I can't keep track of all of the special runs).

Somewhat counter-intuitively, I shoot it better than any of my 9mm guns in competition and turned in a first in my division and 4th of 27 overall in my last match. The fat grip fits my long fingers perfectly, and makes it hard to deviate laterally if I have a good firing grip.

'Cool' might be this one, a Springfield MC Operator with VZ Operator II grips:

23425

Or these, a Belgian Model 1922 Browning pistol made under German occupation at Liege (with very uncommon Commercial mark), and a Polish VIS-35 pistol made under German occupation at Radom, Poland:

23426

Or this, my legacy piece. My Grandfather's duty gun he carried as a San Francisco Police Department Officer and Sergeant in the 1920s-1950s. It disappeared for a long time after his death and resurfaced when my late aunt was cleaning out my uncle's belongings following his death. She wanted not only for it to stay in the family, but to go to a family Police Officer, and so she gave me the nod. I'm very honored to be the custodian of this one:

I own two I consider to be very cool.

First is a DWM P08 Luger, made in 1915, with all parts matching. It was inherited from my Grandpa. The coolest part of this pistol is the story of how it was acquired.

The second is a Nazi-marked P35, inherited from my Great Uncle. I never heard the story of how he came into this pistol.

If it has de-cocker on left side of slide, grip safety on frame and slide catch for disassembly on left side of frame, then it is P35(p) - wz.35 VIS

Probably my HK4.

It is possible to handle the HK4 improperly, but hardly incorrectly! (per the manual introduction)

The serial number of this handguns indicates that it was intended for police issue. This pistol is of particular interest because it is one of 550 assembled by MAB in France for West Berlin Police. Due to an agreement with the Soviets, it was not legal to arm West Germans with German made weapons. To circumvent this, H&K sent parts and tooling to MAB in France to assemble the pistol, and then ship them to Berlin. Of additional interest, this pistol's serial number indicates it was one of the last few assembles for the contract, and appears to be completely unissued. There is no wear whatsoever on any of the components, and aside from the factory firings has not see any shooting. I purchased it for $600. The kit contains the .32 ACP and .22 LR components.

Voodoo, is that a DIY job on the stipling with a relief(?)cut behind the mag release? If not, who did it.

Been thinking about his for my 17, and I think you just sealed the deal. Nice

Oh, as far as coolest pistol I have LEFT after I had to sell almost everything in the divorce, it's a toss up:

My pre-series Colt Commander in 38 super, or my dads early Colt Python.

A good friend did it. He knows his shit and sadly he doesn't do it for profit.
