Pretty cool. I thought the Missouri was on display in Pearl Harbor?

Did they remove one of her guns or is this a spare?

That's a great story and the first I had heard of it. My wife and I toured Pearl Harbor a few years back and went aboard the Missouri. I was amazed by the sheer size of the guns and the thickness of the armor, hatches, etc. on the turrets.

Once they set those barrels in place, I don't imagine they're going to be too concerned about somebody making off with them in the dead of night. :)

I'm betting it's a spare. And the last time I looked, the Mighty Mo was tied up near the USS Arizona.

Good for those patriotic folks out in Arizona, what a neat tribute.

ETA - Dave beat me to it.

To look so simple an naval rifle is an amazing piece of engineering.

And we think our CHF barrels are cool:

And our C158 bolts are nice, but nothing like this:

The Department of the Navy had spare barrels for guns for all of the combatant ships. The barrels in the video are spares.

I got to see the USS New Jersey fire her 16" guns and it was an impressive sight to see.

Visiting the USS Arizona and USS Missouri to pay my respects is on my bucket list.

The Arizona barrel could indeed be from the ship itself though. Everything above deck level (except in the totally wrecked front portion) was removed during the war. IIRC some of them were used as part of a coastal defense battery in Hawaii.

Speaking of them: In late 69 or early 70’s I was a contractor for CNO and spent some time with CINCPAC. One of the officers notified our team that he was to schedule a VIP tour of Pearl. Of we went to the dock and there was this wooden yacht, something from the rich & famous of the 20 or 30’s. What a friggin piece of workmanship. Off we went and then people jumping in the water from ships, fire on-board and about a dozen zero’s in the air. Holy shit, we probably said at the same time and the sailors laughed. It was the filming of Toro Toro Toro and we just happened to be in the harbor. One sailor informed us that the majority of the cast are sailors, marines & soldiers off duty. Making extra change as extra’s. It was really cool.

For about a week or more, from time to time Zero’s would be flying over the beaches and Island.

Good point. They did remove barrels from the turrets after the USS Arizona was sunk in the attack. If the barrel they are using for the memorial in the state of Arizona has been fired, then it may have come from the ship.

has to be a spare also that video is in state of AZ ? did not know that going to have to go see them :)

I know the USS Arizona was up in Bremerton at the shipyard in past since that is where maintenance was done on her at one point so parts were not really in Pearl ?
I really doubt they would ship a damaged barrel back to the mainland to Virginia during war time just can't see it happening ?

3 and 4 went to local battery placements and were then cut up for scrap ?
pretty good info on this around

#1 which is still on her and #2 were to damaged to be in use as I seem to remember #2 was scrapped along with the structure metal at the time
unless one of the guns from #2 which was damaged and for some reason kept ? but can't see that happening back then ?

what is interesting to know is not until they did the underwater survey sometime in the 80s I remember ? they did not realize #1 turret was still on her ! they were believed to have been salvaged so it could be that somehow a gun from #2 was put away some where ?

but at that time they scrapped/salvaged and used everything for the war and metal shortage they needed all the could get
would be good to ask Daniel Martinez about it I remember talking to him about it but cant remember everything but seem to remember him saying they were scrapped/salvaged ? such a great guy to talk about the Arizona with

the salvage and lack of pumps and other things and of course the danger of explosions ordinance etc. very well could have been the reason #1 was not taken off since the structure had dropped about 30 feet where #2 was much more accessible at the time

I know some of the salvaged parts ? forgot exact a couple catapults and some search lights and 50 cal guns which some went to other ships and shore battery locations had some documentation

One of the original WW2 USS Missouri barrels, one that was mounted on the ship during the Japanese surrender ceremony is now located in the hills north of San Francisco waiting to be mounted as a coastal gun battery display. I kind you not, I see it every time I go hiking there.

yeah really bad scan the original on slide is nicer :)
have more of different areas on the Arizona

also worked down in Micronesia in Chuuk or Truk lagoon
got to talk with folks on both sides that saw the attacks in Pearl Harbor and in Micronesia was something I am glad I got to do when more were alive and clear about it and to hear the first hand accounts of the attacks was very cool
what bites is I have bounced around a lot and lost the original video interviews that witnessed it :(
way before internet and massive backups and digital storage but have all my film still :)
my avatar pic is of a betty bomber
saw some amazing things in my underwater career
this was in Micronesia Japanese soldier

According to the article in the link the 14" gun barrel was removed from the USS Arizona stateside for relining. It was then used on the USS Nevada before winding up back in Virginia.

http://www.navsea.navy.mil/nswc/dahlgren/NEWS/USS_Arizona/USS_Arizona.aspx

There were a lot of pumps and other equipment removed from other ships that sank on battleship row on December 7th. Some of the larger pumps were installed on other ships that were in service for years.

The history behind all this is fascinating.

good find on where it came from :)
I do wonder then when it was at the Bremerton ship yard if that is when and what was happening
