View Full Version : Any quick way to line up my sights?

I installed the Apex DCAEK in my M&P45. It shoots great, but I noticed that I was consistently getting groups slightly to the left of my point of aim. I tried shooting from a sandbag to see if it was my technique, and it was the same. Also had two friends shoot it both from standing and from the sandbag and they had the same results. The sight is still really tight and requires some good hard whacks with a hammer and punch to get it to move. The groups are off slightly, so it's going to be an incremental adjustment...much more precise than a punch can manage and it would probably lead to me taking chunks out of my sight to keep pounding this way and that to line it up.

Any techniques or tools I can use to ensure that I get the sights centered properly? (Fixed sights)

This is the best tool for the job. Definitely not the cheapest though.

Yea I was gonna look into getting a full apex kit but damn that sight tool is expensive as hell. My sights are not centered in the dovetail but I haven't put it on a rest yet to see if it's off.

I am assuming that before you installed the apex, your groups were dead center. If my assumption is correct, would it be better to adjust your trigger finger. Just my $.02.

How many shots per group?
How big is the group(extreme spread)?
How far off is the group from center?
What distance was the group shot at?

Put the slide in a vice and you will much more control. Use a mechanical pencil and draw a line against both sides of the rear sight in the dovetail. This way you can see how much you are drifting it as the sight moves over the line.

Yeah that sear block install requires removing the sight, and if you don't get it back in the same spot as it was before, you sights will be off.

This is what I use ($60)

If you know how far it's off, and you have room at home, see where it's aiming currently with a laser, then move it until it 0's. Should get you close before you go to the range.
