Alexander Woo (True Blood executive producer) has set up a civil rights-era drama series at AMC titled Bombingham, which will center on a 1963 murder in Birmingham, Ala., and its aftermath, that can still be felt in the present day, as the story shifts between the past (1963), and the present, where racial tensions, albeit improved race relations, still exist.

The title "Bombingham" comes from the nickname the black community gave to Birmingham 50 years ago, giving how often racially motivated bombings happened during that era in American history.

Bombingham will be one of a handful of new series set up at TV networks that center on matters of race and racial intolerance, set (entirely, or in part) in the past.

Oh yay, more race baiting bullshit. I was so hoping for more of that.

No, really.

The opportunity to make a "critically acclaimed" drama portraying southern conservatives as nothing but ignorant racists? How could they pass this one up?

More "hate whitey" propaganda.

We have "The Butler" and "12 Years a Slave" and the "Haves and Have Nots" on Oprah's network.

These things are put out there to keep the strife and division between whites and non-whites. The left HAS to keep the hate going to further their agenda.

many on the left really do not want everyone living in harmony...that is a ruse.

Not shocking at all.

They SAY they want diversity and everyone to get along, then the left pulls out all the stops with movies and tv series that do nothing but stir up old bad feelings.

The left has zero to gain if we all get along and we all forget about slavery. Many of them make a healthy living off of the hate, fear and anger of keeping us at each others throats.

Oh, they want diversity alright. As long as white people suffer because of it.

Racial mongering against whites is an industry these days. Unless it's against blacks, then it's just racist.

I will not be watching this show. Not knowing what it was about, I tried to watch The Butler. I realized a few minutes in that it was racially motivated.

Not to piss in the punchbowl, but the left doesn't have a monopoly on divisive speech. Here's a recent letter to the editor from our county treasurer, assessor, and superintendent of schools:

Dear Editorial Board,

The American Dream ended on Nov. 6, 2012. The second term of Barack Obama will be the final nail in the coffin for the legacy of the white Christian male who discovered, explored, pioneered, settled and developed the greatest Republic in the history of mankind.

A coalition of Blacks, Latinos, Gays, Government Workers, Union Members, Environmental Extremists, loony liberal left Media, Hollywood, uniformed (sic) young people, the ‘forever needy’, the chronic unemployed and illegal aliens have now ended Norman Rockwell’s America.

The Cocker Spaniel is now off the front porch. The Pit bull is in the back yard. The Constitution has been replaced with Saul Alinsky’s "Rules for Radicals" and Chicago slicker David Axelrod, along with the international Socialist George Soros, will be pulling the string on their beige puppet bringing us Act 2 of the New World order.

Our circus fatster (sic) Chris Christie helped Obama over the top with a glowing "post Sandy" hug that elevated the Commander in Chief to Mother Teresa status.

People like me are politically irrelevant and I will never again comment on or concern myself with the aforementioned coalition; which has surrendered our culture, our heritage and our traditions without a shot being fired.

We will never again out-vote these people. It will take individual acts of defiance and massive displays of civil disobedience to get back the rights we have allowed them to take away. It will takes zealots, not moderates — not reaching across the isle moderate Rinos — to right this ship and restore this beloved country to its former status.

Those who come after us will have to risk their lives, their fortunes and sacred honor to bring back the Republic that this generation was wantonly frittered away due to "white guilt" and foolish political correctness.

Respectfully,

Max R. Lenington

If they tell the story accurately, they'll show that they were in fact Democrats. The Republican party unfortunately did wind up absorbing many of the southern racists(which unfortunately coincided with the downfall of integrity in the party.) The religious right as we think of it today(a desire for laws that reflect biblical morality,) also made the transition to the Republican party at the time probably based on things like guns and taxes. But ideologically these were Democrats, and it's certainly how they voted.

I predict a failure. AMC has put out some amazing shows considering their roots and the fact that they are not a subscription channel like HBO/Showtime. But they'll put out some stinkers as well.

More info...

“True Blood” exec producer Alexander Woo has set up a drama project at AMC that revolves around a 1963 murder in Birmingham, Ala., that reverberates in the present day.

“Bombingham” takes place in the city that was the epicenter of the modern civil rights movement. The storytelling will shift time frames between past and present to tell the story of a murder that is discovered 50 years later and threatens to upend the fragile peace in the city between whites and African-Americans. The title refers to the city’s nickname in the black community, which suffered a slew of racially motivated bombings and other violence from the late 1940s through the 1960s.

Honestly in living in this state all my life I don't recall the mention of one particular unsolved murder that "reverberates in the present day."

I don't know if the unsolved murder the show is reported to revolve around is one of the many actual unsolved murders or a fictional account. From that perspective it could be an interesting show. The mention of the unsolved murder in all of the news articles I've read do not describe it as being a bombing death so if that isn't the case this show will most likely be nothing but more inflammatory that the title already suggests.

The lax investigations of the time isn't necessarily indicative of the reluctance to solve the crimes. The murders of the four young girls at the 16th Street Baptist Church were solved in 1977. I suspect a murder being solved 50 years later will hardly be something that "threatens to upend the fragile peace in the city between whites and [blacks]" except in the fictional, over-dramatic, inflammatory and biased nature of dramas. Fragile peace? Really? As if we're on the verge of race riots as we speak. Lol.

I'm not sure what Max has in mind when his term expires later this year, but I'm guessing he won't be running for any elected office here. This isn't the first time he's made public statements along these lines and the letter in my previous post is a rather sanitized version in comparison to some of his previous missives.

Feel free to contact him and make him an offer. And just for the record, there are more than a few folks around here that are quick to offer Max an "attaboy." He's just not my cup of tea.

The guy used his county email account to send out letters stating Obama was elected because "… there are more lesbians, queers, Indians, Mexicans and n——— than the rest of us!" and blames the demise of his white, Christian, Norman Rockwell America on government workers, amongst a host of "others." This from a guy retiring after 44 years from a $90K/year government job with full pension and medical benefits.

He's all yours.

Anybody seen downtown Birmingham lately? Years of liberal mismanagement of funds and the city is in bad shape. I think it was one of the top 10 most dangerous cities in the US this year...

I was born(1948)and raised in the deep South and regret to report that many such terrible events did take place. I was in hearing range of two dynamite bombs planted in churches and could relate other similar happenings. The however to these statements is that the very great majority of white southerners were also horrified, and we resent being type cast along with the few nuts that resorted to terror tactics.

Well, see now, you left the racist douschebag part out the first time. From what you first posted, I can't say that I really disagree with him, but now that you added the icing, I think I'll pass. :)
