View Full Version : What slim round feeling handguard would you choose

In the process of building a second 11.5" upper that will be dedicated to iron sights and light weight.

I have found that I get better pointability with slim round feeling handguards for speed in close...

what do you recommend?

Choose the MI Gen 2 in FDE pics in page 3 post.

My carbine is 16, not 11.5, but I like my DD MFR.

The MI handguards and the troys are both nice IMO. I have the troy right now on my 11.5 bcm but I am planning to swap over to the BCM key mod one of these days because it is a lot lighter than the troy rail. I know its not "round" but its pretty close. So if weight is a concern that's what I would choose.

My Centurion CMR feels the best. New BCM KMR feels almost as good, has grippier texture and is lighter. Love both.

My current fave is the Diamondhead. Super slim, natural feel, not all prickly but grippy enough.

This is my first 11.5 upper, and it showed me the way to light weight portable maneuverable happiness.

Lower is a mega with MagPul CTR, MIAD in FDE with Giessele SD-E FWIW.

Appreciate the suggestions, will post a picture when it's complete.

I really like the NSR, I feel like it's the perfect size. Unfortunately for your particular setup, you'd need a new gas block as it's too big.

The Samson is round and feels alright. Noveske keymod and bcm KMR are very good ergonomically. Finish on BCM KMR is sub par in my opinion. Geissele mk1 is my favorite. Oval shaped. Lots of options these days.

NSR or KMR. I'd be putting a KAC URX 3.1 10.75 on it, if it were me.

I put a CMR on a DDV7 and really like the weight and feel shooting this rifle. Fairly easy installation. It's been through a couple of classes and a lot of rounds.
Lots of good options mentioned.

I was in the same situation as you. I wanted something super slim and durable. I did a bunch of research and eventually ended up with the Novekse NSR rail. heres a photo of me wrapping my hand around the rail. I have pretty small hands and I can get a VERY good C-clamp on the rail. Hope this helps you a little bit. good luck!

NSR was worked OK for me. I suspect there are at least a few other brands that I'd have been just as happy with. For gear-obsessors, it's easy to overthink this purchase.

It is very hard to find data on the outside diameter of the Troy Alpha or the Noveske NSR.

The newer Apex is 1.970", The Rainer from above post is 1.80" and the MI Gen 2 is 1.50".

I felt the ALG Defense at SHOT and truly liked that option and support the Giessele clan to the tune of three triggers already.

For weight considerations and specification so far the MI remains in the lead. I hope someone would post the outside diameter of the troy and NSR options.

Thanks all

Kmr and nsr and basically in the same ballpark when it comes to $$ the kmr does have its +'s tho

B5 Keymod hand guards are very slim - for $28.00 you can't go wrong, no shipping charge.

I swapped out the big, clunky military style hand guards (I'm sure there's some sort of nomenclature, but I don't know what it is...) for the B5 Keymods and what a difference.

Plus, they were a snap to change out, but I guess they should be since I have a Delta ring tool.

I'd also look at the SLR stuff

I have a SOLO, round with slightly raised flats.

How does the Apex feel in your hands? Is it pretty rigid and have any flex? The 9" version I have seems to be very rigid. Nice combination of traction without being abrasive. It fits my large-ish hands very well.

This is an older Apex and it is great, but the MI Gen 2's I have felt are definitely narrower. The Apex is rock solid kit, love the textured surface.

+1

I love the small circumference of my MI Gen2 SS hand guard. This is the 15" rail on my 16" rifle but their 10" would prolly be ideal. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/03/10/pege7yje.jpg

Another vote here for the Centurion CMR. I switched from a Troy Bravo rail and couldn't be happier. It's lighter, slimmer and doesn't require rail covers to prevent it from acting like a cheese grater. Plus the machining and finish on the CMR is far superior.

And now I am running the PWS DI handguard. It is part of their jump into the non piston world. I haven't done a grip picture yet but it is just a bit thicker than the other two, very comfortable though.

Wow never knew they had rails/handguards that slim. Wouldn't it be too hot to handle without always wearing gloves?

DMViergever
03-10-14, 21:10
I have not had issues just running drills and that sort of thing, a few mag dumps but I also haven't just dropped rounds just because, kinda expensive these days.

I think there is probably a balance between thickness and working as a heat sink and thin and really well ventilated. The Midwest is really open and ventilated while the Parallax is pretty thick.

Thanks for posting those recent pictures, of the MI Gen 2, shows the ability to wrap around, and the ventilation differences.

No problem. I have write ups on tbe Parallax and SSK on here and the website. PWS is coming this weekend so I will get some gripping photos Friday.

ETA: I don't have real big hands, I wear a medium glove and can just barely palm a basketball.

Budget build? ALG might be tough to beat. Nice roundish profile you're looking for.
No budget restrictions, the "slimness" of the NSR is very nice with a continuous top rail.
Lots of good suggestions above as well. I agree with HMAC above, don't overthink it.

I don't have big mitts either, FWIW.

Apex Machine hand guard in this photo, I've got one on a BCM 14.5". Good feel once I finally got it on properly, a little heavy compared to the NSR. And I'll have a KMR 13 installed with 16" barrel in a week which I think I'll like even better.

Question for you slim rounded handguard FF folk. Since the handguard tubes are slimmer and closer to the barrel. Do they get hotter faster? Or is it about the same as say a MOE or a DD quad rail?

Love this handguard, although it is a tight fit on the Seekins adjustable .750 seat gas block. There is only about .017" clearance under the MI Gen 2 SSK/fde.

I had sent an email to MI, they never replied on whether it would fit that block...

All 3 FDE's shown LOL BCM, MagPul and MI's

Barrel is an AR Performance that I will be able to direct thread my AAC Cyclone on should I so choose.
