Hey all, I was hoping many of you with vast knowledge could help me out and ease my anxiety. On my Colt 6720R I am removing the stock receiver extension (buffer tube) to a milspec 6 position tube because I really don't like the 4 positions as i'm a smaller guy. Anyway, my question is it okay to replace my 7075 extension with the new 6 position tube I received which is 6061 T6? I am no metallurgist so any help would be appreciated and of course the new sling attachment will be installed and my castle nut staked. Thanks in advance for answering a novice question.

It will fit and work. But your New RE will be less than half as strong.

(assuming my memory serves me right on the tensile strength numbers previously posted)

Why wouldn't you just get one made of 7075?

Yeah it's roughly 83,000PSI to 45,000PSI. Big difference between 6K and 7K series aluminum.

At the end of the day it probably won't matter to most folks, but it's a huge strength and quality upgrade for very little money.

Thanks for the feedback, the answers are what are what I was already assuming. I'll just pick one up from Grant or BCM. I'm confused then why on say a pretty expensive (which is all relative) AR such as a piston operated PWS then why are their new buffer tubes 6061? i don't understand that. Thanks for the info guys and Markm I enjoy following you I find you hilarious. I think if I told you where a brand new LWRC was located you would go blow it up instead of adding to the collection. Been lurking here forever, soaking info up but didn't begin to post until very recently.

Without going into detail, the properties of 7075 make it a better material than 6061 for the RE
