Maybe JD has seen the trend in the Beer industry with craft breweries taking a significant chunk of "Domestic/Imports" sales. Out of all the people I know that used to drink Bud/Bud Light, Miller Lite, etc are now only drinking craft beers.
I see both sides of the argument. JD has worked to keep the title "Tennessee Whiskey" as a quality indicator, but is facing the scrutiny of the "Bourbon" label or the "Champagne" label. I also see the other side that most "Craft" (whether it be beer, liquor, wine) can actually have better control and flavors than large industries.
They need to create a standard that allows the name to remain prestige, but doesn't exclude craft industries making a quality product.

Revealing article on "craft" distilleries:http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2013/06/distilling-deceit/309308/

Things are not always what they seem. Some folks are selling nothing more than a fancy bottle and slick marketing.

Meh... If it's made in Tennessee, it's Tennessee Whiskey. I can see what they were going for, but the Jack Daniels Protection Act basically shuts down an entire states name for production of non complying whiskey, some of which could be really great. It's easier when that's an AVA or a county because producers are limited to a smaller area. I can't think of any other product with such a broad restriction at a state level. Simply the rule that the production must occur entirely within the state.

Frankly, this is the whiskey biz taking to much from the wine industry...

This speaks to some of the fear of JD and also upcoming true craft breweries/distilleries. It's the hipsters that cause some of the movement. But those beer breweries, at least in our area, lose out sales (even with hipster support) to the actually good beers.
I would imagine over time the same would happen for liquor. If I am paying 2-3 times the price of the beer or liquor I normally drink it isn't bc it is cool to me it is because it truly tastes better and may have local/(Made in USA fad) or processes that I like as well.

"Tennessee Whiskey" is a unique style based mostly on its grain bill and the "charcoal mellowing". Just like you can only call brandy "cognac" in the Cognac region of France or sparkling wine "Champaign" if it is made in that region and with their process. I'm not sure if JD invented the style or not.

As far as "Hipsters" up near me the cool thing to drink is old cheap brands like PBR. Dopes.

Yup. Tennessee whiskey is different because they filter the raw alcohol before it goes into barrels for aging in a charcoal filter. I believe JD uses sugar maple when they make the charcoal.

Personally, I like the George Dickel Barrel Select over and above Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Select. For me, if it tastes good, I'll sip it!

Bulliet Burbon does it for me.
