View Full Version : OK, which Colt did I get?

Picked up a like new Colt from a buddy of mine. It was a good enough deal that it didn't matter which Colt it is. The RE has been changed out, I assume because it was fixed at one time. There is no bayonet lug but has an A2 flash hider and the barrel is marked with the normal C MP 5.56 NATO 1/7 and has a "F" marked FSB. AR15 BCG and "H" buffer. Is it a hodge podge Colt or is it factory? I'm guessing it's a MT6400 but I'm not sure. Either way, it's a nice clean gun. I know there is a lot of debate on the AR15 vs. M16 BCG, is the factory AR15 setup good to go? Thanks in advance..

Views of the whole rifle would help. It looks like it has an unshrouded carrier which tends to be hard on the firing pin

I'll take some of the whole rifle. I've added MOE hand guards and stock. Had a RAS and standard M4 on it when I got it.

ETA: I did just notice the FH isn't timed and there isn't a crush washer. It may have been threaded? I'll fix that tonight.

You ditched a Knight's RAS for a MOE?

WTFover??

It's in the parts bin, I am playing around with different setups. I'm not used to a carbine gas system anymore, everything I have has 12"+ rails on them. This gun won't see "duty" for the time being, maybe some training days. It was really cheap, I'll probably change out the BCG and shoot it as is.

Its a MT6400C that had its muzzle threaded by a third party. It originally had a post ban compliant muzzle brake.

It originally had a pinned waffle carbine stock.

The half circle carrier is correct for a Colt of that era.

Those barrels are actually nice m4 barrels. I'd have to get a 16 carrier. Those ramped carriers are a bummer.

Run it as is without worry.

I'd have done the same thing. You can keep them quad rails

Every rifle I've had with ramped carriers and notched hammers eats firing pin retaining pins, and chews up firing pins. I wouldn't run it like that.

An un-notched hammer should stop the carnage, but I'd throw a proper bolt carrier in it too.

As eodinert pointed out, those carriers belong in the trash or museum. I have a firing pin from a RRA Arbortion that is noticeably bent and was probably close to breaking just before the spool. Get a real carrier and fix the minor stuff.

The great thing about the recent gun panic was that I was able to unload a Colt Ramped carrier that was previously just a paper weight.

So, I bought this too late huh :) I'll shelve the BCG and replace it. Thanks guys for the info..

Oh yeah, 'quad rails' aren't popular anymore. It's better to use bigger, heavier and weaker plastic handguards with junk screwed to 'em instead.

Gotcha!

There's no way I'm running a MOE if the KAC RAS is available. I can see the quad rail being a little much on a 12.0-15.0 rail. I get that... but on a little old carbine? I'll take the KAC.

You would screw junk to your handguards?

I've never liked quad rails, even before they were popular. I find the MOE handguards (or a smooth FF tube) to be more practical for my application and more comfortable to use. I've had no use for a quad rail

Oh, a hipster!

I would never bolt any junk to a plastic handguard.

Too much work. I'm too lazy to ride a fixie, too fat to wear skinny jeans and too beat up by my kids to have any pretenses. Just old fashioned, truth be known- a Curmudgeon in Training
