Some interesting photos of the preparation and loading of the atomic bombs dropped on Japan in WWII:

Weird to think my dad was the same age as the young guys in some of these pics, sitting on a PT boat in Manila, staging for an invasion of Japan which never happened because (at least in part) of the bombs getting loaded up in these pictures.

Very cool, but I couldn't help to think of the USS Indianapolis CA-35 and her brave crew that delieverd the goods to Tinian on 26 July 1945.

Very cool.

Here is my Grandfather on Tinian as part of the 509th Composite Group. He didnt ride with Fat Man or Little Boy but was supposedly invovled in some sort of related mission supporting the those guys. He died before I was born so I couldnt ever ask him. Spent his whole career in the service. I'm working on getting his service records.

...and I thought you were about to get banned for posting gay porn. Then again, what does it say about my twisted mind that I opened the thread thinking that...;)

That's awesome. I was actually on Tinian when I was stationed in Guam. We go to go to Henderson Field and check it out.

After reading your post and re-reading Dave's thread title I couldn't help but think of the Southpark episode where Cartman joins NAMBLA.

Thanks for posting these. I always had the impression that "the bomb" was much bigger than it looks in the photos. Interesting to see a person standing beside it to give some scale.

Yeah, that was really a terrible incident.

Same here, I'm used to seeing the bomb hanging partially out of a B-29 so I imagined it to be just a little bigger. Really interesting pictures.

I had to google to see what you were all talking about.

Talk about poor luck on the Japanese part. 4 days would have changed the war.

My grandfather went into WWII as a carpenter. After basic training and AT in Armored, Ft Knox and Ft Gordon, he was sent to Oak Ridge, Tn to supervise a crew doing construction of buildings on the what is now the National Laboratory. Later went on to work for the TVA.
