There seems to be a little 300blk making its way back onto the ammo market. Anyone know why 147gr is usually the cheapest? What about 147gr makes it a less expensive round?

The bullets are surplus and usually pulled from M-80 7.62x51. I try to stick with bullet weights I would use for hunting and defense which is 110-130 grains or above 205 grains.

What Nightvisionary said is it.
I prefer the Barnes 110g TTSX as my first choice, with 19 gr of H110. Very accurate round. Its hard to find though.

The 147gr are usually used for plinking. Cheap and 300blk should not be used together as I've rarely seen anything <$1 a round.

FWIW, I can handload 300blk match ammo for half that.

they are pulls that can be bought for 5-7c a piece if bought in large enough quantities.

Even at 60c a round which is generally what the 147g commercial reloads are selling for the place is still making 50%+ on the round.

300BLK is a reloaders round still IMO. Now maybe when Remington gets off their ass and start the production line of 115g plinking ammo up again we will see other manufacturers jump on board with new offerings. Supposedly Remington shut down production to build a new line that would be more efficient(i.e. cheaper for them to make ammo), however they havent made any ammo in over a year. Cant make money if you dont have product to sell. There is nothing "cheap" on the market anymore except the 60c per round 147g pulls.

If that is true that will be great. The brass that Remington makes is similar to 5.56 NATO brass in that the base/web is double struck in the machine for added durability. Their brass is the best factory brass out there I think. I cant say the same for Hornady brass. Although ill just stick with the LC brass that I produce and keep reloading for a 50%+ savings.

Where can you find them this cheap? Lowest price I've seen is 20 cents each and that's even buying 2k at a time.

Well that explains that then. No way I'm buying anything close to that. Lol. Not sure my bank account would be to happy.

I read on 300blktalk that many people are getting surplus 7.62x39 and 7.62x54 projectiles real cheap, running them the lee sizer and getting great plinking rounds. Some people are reporting that they are using the Zmax .310 rounds meant for an AK without resizing and they are working extremely well in their 300 AAC.

I've shot these 147g FMJ's from PNW and they are 1-2MOA ammo, really good results from my 10.5". Got them for about 65cents a round at the time, but I've since moved to reloading.

50% is gross for those that retail direct. Depending on the size of the company and their overhead, net is considerably less in most cases.

Does anyone know if these bullets are hard on a barrel? Mine attract a magnet so i'm not sure if they are steel core or copper plated steel jackets that might damage my barrel. Any definitive yes or no?

surplus 7.62x39 and 7.62x54

Most of the 7.62x39 surplus rounds are bi-metal jacketed. Some early ammo was steel-core, but importation was stopped (back in the days of cheap SKS's) and nowadays a steel-core 7.62x39 round is a collector's item.

Alot of the old surplus 7.62x54 rounds are mild-steel core (new / modern production ammo usually is not).
Look online, there is an identification guide to read the Cyrillic writing on the spam-cans of ammo. If you get only the bullets after they are pulled, well for old 7.62x54 the chances are good it's the "LPS" round, which is a mild steel core.

that might damage my barrel. Any definitive yes or no?

Anytime you shoot _anything_ thru your barrel it wears the barrel, more or less.
there are plenty of old Mosin rifles and AK's that shot steel-core for decades and still going strong, (usually they rust-out but that's because of the corrosive ammo)
