I've been lurking here for a while. Looking to build a 727. My questions are about the handguards. I know they have the slim profile but I think those would heat up too fast. Does anybody still make quality replacements? Were the m4 style or kac ras ever used on the 727?

Fat M4 hand guards would have came factory on any colt carbine past 2008. I have never seen a 727 made past the mid 2000s.

2008 and earlier would have been skinny handgaurds. However I have seen 727s made past 1994 that had fat M4 handgaurds that were ordered this way. The standard skinny handgaurd was the catalog spec until 2008.

Any 727 made before 1994 would most definately have skinny handgaurds as the fat ones weren't invented yet.

It would be plausible for a RAS/RIS to be used on a 727 in the early days of SOPMOD or MWS but have never seen a picture or example of this.

What era of gun are you trying to recreate?

1996. I bought a 14.5 Colt barrel that was dated 8/96. That would be the starting point. I'm on the fence about which way to go. The keep it simple look with the skinny handguards or the sopmod look with rail, vg, and the aimpoint. I'm not a big fan of the m4 handguards regardless. What would have been on the rifle in 1996?

Bushmaster made some quality skinny handguards. I had them come on an upper I bought a while ago.

They still sit unused in a parts bin if you can't find any let me know.

In 2005 I was issued a 727 in Iraq and it had a KAC RAS, and we were issued KAC vertical grips, and Aimpoint Comp M2's with ARMS mounts, and they were mounted on the RAS. Some guys got ARMS carry handle mounts for the Aimpoints.

It would be unlikely a 1996 production 727 would be in US military service. The 727s purchased in COTS for the military were made before 1994.

Yes, there were a number of 727s purchased in the late 1980s and early 1990s for special forces service.
