View Full Version : Oil or grease on alumninum frame handgun?
I just picked up a Lionheart LH9C, can't wait to give it a go. I recall reading a long time ago that Bruce Gray recommended using only grease on the rails of an aluminum framed handgun, like a Sig, instead of oil. Does anyone know if it really makes a difference?
I'd go with grease on the rails since they're aluminum and the slide is steel(high friction point). Grease, having a higher viscosity, tends to stay in place better on the rails, and use oil/clp everywhere else imo.
It definitely does stay slick with grease. I only use it on the rails though.
I normally use Miltec TW25b on my Sig rails. Sig has been using it on their factory guns since the late 1990s and it has been considered to be the best grease for preserving alloy rails in the long run. Oils just don't stay on the rails long enough to reduce the amount of rail wear enough. There might be other grease brands out there now days that are just as good, but I haven't tried shopping around.
Sounds good. I've already got me a good amount of TW25B that's just sitting around, I'll just use that.
Any recommendations on what I can use to clean the gun with that's got TW25B on it? I'm using Fireclean right now as my do-everything, but as I recall, the manufacturer recommended not mixing the Fireclean with anything else.
I use Brian Enos "Slide-Glide" or Slip2000 EWL grease on my rails. I also have used TW-25B on my SiGs.
I use milcom or pro-gold on the rail of both my sigs. Then I put an oil on top. I use the willson stuff on but fireclean would be fine.

A rag. Nothing will stick to the gun if there's grease on it and all you gotta do is wipe it off and put more more grease on it. I used to use Lubriplate #105 engine assembly lube (NLGI #0 grease) on Sigs and Berettas and they were very easy to clean.

Agree. All you have is slippery dirt. I use Enos Slide Glide or Frog lube paste. Both work.
Slippery dirt is fine. Dry dirt is bad. Just wipe the rails down during cleaning, apply a fresh coat of TW25b and call it good.

Any of these greases work in sub zero temps? It's not unusual to get to 20-25 below F. here.

I have very little experience with sub-zero temps. My emphasis has been on hot weather performance. Coming from Texas to GA as I have. I think any reputable gun lube Co would have info on cold temp performance.
This is the Slip2000 EWL grease that I use. It is rated for very low temperatures.

TW-25B, Super Lube grease, and Slip 2000 grease all have very wide temp. ranges as mentioned above. With that said, I don't think grease is required. A really good CLP like Weaponshield will prevent wear just as well as grease.

I find that the oils I use evaporate too quickly off my pistols....I now normally grease my rails and barrel hood/outer barrel with Tetra and use oil for everything else. I've heard very good things about TW25B but damn it's pricey.

Cheap, works well, lasts a long time and this 1lb tub will last me until the sun burns out.
I use this on all my SIGs.
