Shopping for a bolt gun in .223/5.56.
Fondled a remington 700 in .223 with a 16 inch threaded barrel. Rifle will be basically a plinker. No specific role, but accuracy has to be up to snuff.100-300yards. Not going to sink a ton into scope.
Leaning toward a 700 SPS with hogue stock and 20 inch barrel. Stock 84206.

Anyone have any experience with these? I see some specs with .223, and some with .223/5.56 nato. They quoted me 650.

Picked up a very lightly used Remington PSS in 223 last fall for for that price range. Advantages; H&S precision stock, 1-9 twist and a 26" tube which can be chopped to desired length need be for cheap.

For what you want it seems like you found the perfect rifle. I picked up a similar set up 2 yests ago and im still enjoying it.

I dont hunt with it or conduct any serious work with it. It's just a practice, plinking and range rifle. Moderate glass and an old stock of unknown make and its become one of my favorites.

Picked up the other day. Leupold 4x12. Not sure about the hogue stock. Very grippy. Might put it in something else down the road.

Also, my barrel is marked .223. I saw a similar model marked .223/5.56. Why are some marked different? Different chambers?

The difference in minimal but still a difference. It is mostly in the throat of the 5.56 which is longer than the 223 thus causing 5.56 fired in a 223 chamber to have higher pressure. A well built rifle can take it and does unknowingly in many cases everyday but still can't be recommended. 223 fired in a 5.56 chamber is not a problem but some say the longer throat can cause the 223 Amo not to be as accurate.
