View Full Version : Quality Custom Gear- Who Makes It?

As stated, looking for a good quality company that can make custom /semi custom gear.
I alread have a pretty good idea what I want, just can't sem to find it retail anywhere.
Basically what I want to build is a very simple 2-part/modular low profile plate carrier, and an all-MOLLE chest rig- Obviously more to it than that, but that's the basics.

I wish I could find a gear company in my area- being able to explain something in person is always better than email and pictures.
It needs to be actual *good* quality gear- I'd love something on par with Mayflower quality or so. I'm not going to deploy, but it *will* be used seriously- it won't be sitting in a closet so I can play dress-up once a month.
I also don't want to break the bank on it- it's very simple stuff I have in mind, so it *shouldn't* but I know how "custom" and "budget" always meshes so well...;)

Any suggestions for companies that can handle making gear like this, please let me know.

Beez combat systems http://www.beezcombatsystems.com/ has always treated me extremely well and their prices treat my budget well too.

Instead of making another thread, what is the best for your buck. Top tier gear, at a great buy. Looking for the same products myself. Anyone?

ETA: wont be used for deployment, I am not MIL or LE. Just want good gear at a good price.

Thanks for the replies.

Hmm.... to bad EGL is in CO(?).

Here's the thing- I know*almost* to a "T" what I want to do (some pro input would be nice though)- however, in some cases I feel like drawings/pictures/detail info wouldn't cut it, and even though it's all real simple to me after poring over it for a while, I'd almost have to demonstrate the idea to get it across.
*sigh* What to do....

Contact Ferro Concepts, they'll use top quality materials to build exactly what you want. Might not be cheap, but it will be good.

I got to ask, are your needs that unique that you can not find one quality gear maker that makes what you want/need?

Well, that's the first time I heard of them on a forum like this-I thought they were mostly popular with the airsoft crowd.
A friend of mine has one of their PCs which is a decent design, but I'e ben waiting to see how it holds up to use.

Yes and no... :P
It's a case of where I'll find a couple things that half work, and nobody makes the hybrid item I want.
There are some things that are *very* close that have been considered, or bought and tested. At this point I've spent way to much on testing gear- it's getting ridiculously frustrating so I figure, get the stuff made how I want, sell what doesn't work that I own currently, and drive on. I have way to much other stuff to spend time and money on as opposed to incessantly going around in "geez that *almost* works" circles, as I am currently.
That being said, what I want is not super special, and frankly quite simple- it's just that no-one makes it.

Hey I can second EGL (Egg roll) Spent time on the phone with him told him what I needed and how I wanted item config'ed an email or 2 later he did it and executed it to exact specs.

There are several items COTS that will serve your purpose v getting a true "custom' Rig made.

Custom piece of kit that I just lent to a dude going back over.

Ouch, airsoft crowd for Ferro? I know those geeks will spend a lot of money, but damn. One of the guys in their pictures is a friend of mine, he's who got me into their product and he runs his stuff hard. I've had some of their items last longer than other well-known gear companies.

If you want someone or try to put something together but don't want to get into any patent issues, let me know. I've had my supportive wife do a lot of stitching for me, whether Crye-esque pants/shirts (there's NO reason to pay that much...) or kit items by making hybrids. I'm not the least but interested in making money off it, so if it's a one time deal for now I'm sure we could get it done.

Check out 762tactical.com as well. He's a good dude and not mass producing anything, and helped me with parts to improve a few AK chest rigs I needed to bring with me in a time crunch.

Hey SOW, how much would you charge for some "Crye-esque" pants? That Ferro stuff looks fairly nice.

Most have been mentioned but here's a list:

LOL...they aren't really a standardized thing. I have a lot of issued items (the Proper USMC FROG stuff) that are fire resistant and pretty solid if you reinforce the stitching. I use that, the old tri-colors I have, and a bunch of fire resistant t-shirts I buy in bulk.

They're Franken-pants, but I take the pockets off of blouses/pants I have used for parts and add them where I see fit. Then she puts the sleeves and half the back onto the tee, and whatever material gets cut off the tee goes into a stretch portion above the knees, in the crotch, and above the seat.

Since I'm using stuff I already have on hand it usually costs about $15 per item. Oddly enough the shirts are harder to do than the damn pants. Well, at least it seems that way from my view from the couch...

.....

Well, my bad then- the airsoft scene is the only place I've ever seen or heard of them mentioned.

Looking at the the companies here, I'm almost entertaining the thought of doing each part of this with seperate makers- some seem better suited to ideas I have for the PC, and some might be better suited to the CR. We'll have to see after I start finalizing ideas and drawing stuff up.
The PC I'm pretty set on, and it just need to be finalized.
The CR on the other hand is still a bit of a conflict between what I want it to do, and what I may have to settle for- and I *hate* settling. >:(

Of course, here's to hoping there's not any serious patent problems involved.....that would be just my luck.

Side note- anyone know if UW Gear (http://www.uwgearinc.com/index.html) is any good? The few reviews I've read seem positive.
Haven't checked with them to see if they ever do custom work, but it seems nice, I've talked to the guy who runs them in a couple other places, and he seems like a good fella'.
