I am thinking of building a 9mm.

who makes good uppers and lowers in this caliber?

anything inparticular I should know about building one of these?

RRA is the way to go. Adco carries them.

I built a RRA factory built CAR A4 upper half, stripped RRA 9mm lower, RRA LPK, RRA 9mm hammer & buffer, Hahn top loading mag block, Colt mags and ACE M4 SOCOM buttstock, my build was smooth, no problems and it runs fine.

The upper to lower fit is nice and tight, tighter than my other Colt and LMT receivers.

I would recommend the Hahn mag block but the RRA is fine also of what I've heard.

I'm not too satisfied with my ACE stock and I might replace it with either the standard Mil-Spec CAR collapsible stock or the new Magpul CTR pre-production stock.

RRA parts are the best way to go. I did my build using RRA parts and a Colt mag block.

Slowly working on a 9mm build...:D I'm using a Mega lower, which is stamped "multi" for the caliber line. I went with that in case I had a last minute bout of indecisiveness and changed calibers. The upper will be a RRA A4 from ADCO, just saving the money for it.

RRA's are nice. I am running a OLY right now and it eats any ammo.

I am thinking of building a 9mm AR. My plan would be to save the 5.56 for a rainy day or cheaper prices and go to 9mm.

9millie is a lot cheaper to reload.
