Hello guys. I bought a pre-ban CAI WASR 10/63 over the weekend and I got a smoking deal on it that I just could not pass up. The rifle is in great condition, with some regular shooter wear. Piston looks great, most of the internals look solid. Two things that I noticed when I broke the rifle down in front of the guy, and when I got home, is that the dust cover is extremely difficult to get back on the rifle. I'm a big guy and I had a ton of pressure on it, and I just could not get it to click. I found out through further examination that the dust cover was good to go, but the trunnion was worn down, a tad rough and not allowing the cover to come down over the tabs. So, I am planning on replacing the trunnion with a new model, I may replace the dust cover down the road. Also, the pin the hold the upper hand guard is worn down to a nub and most of it is gone, I can get it off with pliers but not with my hands, that also needs replaced.

I am looking at this rifle as a truck gun to make Montana runs that I frequently do to visit family. I would like to know a good place online to get AK replacement part that I can fix/enhance my rifle with. I plan on getting a rifle dynamics M4 style buffer tube, and some kind of rail down the road, but right now I'm just looking to fix the problems I have right now. I also have not had a chance to shoot it as of yet, but I plan to this weekend. Any help would be appreciated!

From what I am seeing, and please correct me if I'm wrong, all pre-ban WASR's are Romanian Ak's?

Yes, WASR's are Romanian.

Thanks, just needed some confirmation there.

It should have a Romanian proof mark on the trunnion. A triangle or a triangle with an upwards arrow inside, similar to a Russian proof mark. Do a google search on Romanian AK proof marks. You'll see what I mean.

I've already got most of these guys pegged for performance upgrades, sights, rails, etc. But I do appreciate the reminder.

Centerfire Systems also has AK parts and/or kits from time to time.

Replacing a trunnion and the hand guard lever will require pretty significant surgery.

Really? From what I understand (And like I said, please correct me if I'm wrong) the trunnion and that lever look relatively easy to replace. I stripped and cleaned the rifle the night before last and got a good look at the trunnion issue, and I should honestly be able to file down the marred side and be good to go. It's a very small lip that the dust cover is catching on but it's solid enough to make it difficult to fit up, I have to tap the end with something hard like the butt of a screwdriver to knock it on there. The guy replaced the springs and went with wolf springs and those things are damn stiff.

The pin has worn down, this is the pin the gentleman said I should be able pull this with pliers. I have not attempted this yet though.

I was also told to look for the markings, and some have said this is a negative one.

That's the Romanian proof mark I mentioned earlier.

Pic #1: This is what you need:http://www.robertrtg.com/store/pc/AK-GAS-TUBE-LOCK-NEW-4p1664.htm it is a gas tube lock which includes the lever. It is a five minute job to replace it if you know what you're doing.

Pic #2: I'm not sure what you see as wrong with the arsenal markings on the trunnion. The arrow in a triangle is just a Romanian (in the case of your WASR) marking for the factory. Other trunnions on other AKs that have arrows within a triangle are for Russian Izhevsk factory, but it is unlikely they used a Russian trunnion in Romania for a WASR.

Am I missing something?

ETA: I read your original post and see the bit about the dust cover. Just file the dust cover to fit rather than worry about the trunnion. Replacing the trunnion is basically building the AK from scratch again. To do it, you have to remove the barrel and either carefully drill out the front rivets and remove the trunnion, or remove the barrel once the trunnion is out. Then rivet it in. Then fit the barrel and headspace the bolt. Then drill a new barrel pin groove in the barrel. Either way, not an easy job and would cost far more than a new WASR costs if you have someone else do it. Then replace it with another one.

If the problem is the dust cover fit, then just take a file and trim the dust cover until it fits. If the dust cover is damaged, a used one can be had for $15-$25 and then fitted. An AK isn't an AR, so it is common to have to fit parts.

My bad - I thought you were talking about the lower hand guard lever which is part of an end cap where all the pinned items forward of it on the barrel would need to come off to get at it. The one for the gas tube is completely broken off in your picture! Wonder how they managed that?!

Someone else covered the trunnion replacement headache.

He said it must have just fallen off. It's not like it's on a wear point or anything so I find it difficult to figure out exactly what went down. Seems like an easy fix though thankfully.
