It's been brought to my attention that a painted AR thread exists already, so I'll post a question.

Has anyone rattle caned a cerakoted AR? My question is if rattle can paint will come off, and leave the cerakote in pristine condition should I decide to remove the rattle can paint job?

There is a thread in the custom build forum. "Painted AR's" I believe. There are plenty of rattle can paint jobs in there.

There you go.

Thanks, I didn't know where to look. Still, building my post count and all.

No problem. If you have any questions about painting, just shoot me a PM.

Ever rattle can a cerakoted firearm, and then try to remove the rattle can paint job? Was the cerakote still in good condition?

I haven't personally cerakoted a rifle. I have removed Krylon from a cerakoted rifle and it should give you any trouble. Brake cleaner strips the Krylon right off and leaves the cerakote where it should be.

One of my LMT's is cerekoted FDE as a base coat, which I then sprayed over with Aervoe green and brown spray paint.

The spray paint has worn off in some areas, but the cerakote under it remains intact. I haven't tried to strip the spray paint top-coat, but I'd imagine that any abrasive or solvent that the cerakote is otherwise impervious to, would simply remove the less durable spray paint and not hurt the cerekote finish.

The only spots I've really seen the cerakote wear through is in, and around the mag-well. Cerakote is a tough paint...but it's still paint...and will wear away with time.

Yes it works, and is a very common practice...I see it most with my customers that are avid duck hunters.
