View Full Version : The Burning House: What GUN would you take with you?

I stumbled upon a site called “The Burning House” where people list and post pictures of things they would save if their house were burning down. They encourage people to think of the question in terms of: “…a conflict between what's practical, valuable, and sentimental. What you would take reflects your interests, background and priorities. Think of it as an interview condensed into one question.”

So, what handgun would you grab if you could save only 1?

Mine would probably be my HK45c. It has been utterly reliable, it would last me forever, and it’s a .45

The most expensive gun in my safe is my 6920. The rest are Glocks and other "work" type guns that can easily be replaced. With that said, I'd grab my Ruger MKII 22/45. It's my first, given to me by my father.

I'd take the gun attached to my body at that time.

If the house is on fire, it's not worth dying for to retrieve a gun. I did spend a huge chunk of change on a fire rated gun safe, so I hopefully won't have to worry about this.

If we're talking strictly handguns, I'd choose my G19 with TLR-1.

I trust it and shoot it well. It's easy to maintain and spare parts/magazines are easy to come by.

I lost confidence in my Hk45c unfortunately.

Seeing that my 637-2 stays on me except when I'm sleeping, that would be already there on my hip.

If I were retrieving one that wasn't on my body would probably be my H&K91 or my AR-15a4 home built - very hard decision there. Like Boat_trash said no gun is worth dying for, it would have to be an extenuating circumstance for me to run into a burning house.

Ahh ya that would do it :-/ Though, mine has been 100% and I even sent it back to H&K a them install a match hammer, some lighter springs, etc.. So, I can't complain too much about my trigger

One of my GLOCK 19s. Currently my GEN3 is what's out of the safe. I also have a fireproof safe so hope to save all of my collection but understand what the OP's point is. I've asked myself numerous times the "What one gun?" question and it's almost always one of my 19s.

Man this is like asking if you can only save one of your kids which one would you choose. :-) I guess I would just grab my PPQ. It's my EDC.

The 19 is a solid choice. I feel like I there's no good reason NOT to pick the 19, but I almost can't get over grabbing the glock after spending all that $$ on fancier guns.

Great-grandfather's top-break Smith and Wesson revolver. He carried it as a Texas peace officer in the 1880's. I'd snag that, the insurance company can buy me a new one of everything else.

If only could take one, it would have to be Grandpa's 30-30 model 94. Can I trade wife for SBRs ??

Well my carry gun is always on my hip if I have jeans on...so I wouldn't have to grab it, it's always on my hip... So with that said I would grab my DDMK18

Inkslinger
05-05-14, 20:52
For me it would be "guns". There's a M&P on the nightstand and a SBR next to the headboard. I can't imagine I wouldn't be able to grab both. Hell, sling the rifle and I'll still have a free hand. As far as the rest? Nothing my insurance can't replace.

If its handgun only, my Glock 19. It's what I carry and shoot the most.

If rifles, my Daniel Defense v3 w/aimpoint comp m4s. With the aimpoint, it is the most expensive gun in my collection.

Easy question, the suppressed SBR by the bed; it's only other gun in the house besides our two carry guns. the rest are locked in the workshop armory.

Id save myself and the girl. Insurance can cover the rest - sentimental stuff would suck to lose but im not risking living the "wicker man" over some pics or other non living items... if it wasn't a big risk Id save the cat. My girlfriend really likes it and might make it worth my effort.

Guns? If I awake to fire the ak is by the window. I sleep with my ar slung so Im covered there. Id throw the ak down with the furball. Yea, I got this.

Screw that, it was easier to build an armory than to try to stuff myself into an already over full safe.

I own really nice safes with some serious fire ratings. After that, there's always whatever happens to be in my vehicle. After that, guns are replaceable tools. Sure I have some things that are sentimental: a rifle my dad have me on my 25th birthday. Some handguns my grandfather gave me...but, at the end of the day, I'm just making sure my loved ones are all ok. Stuff is just stuff.

Well considering my house did burn down this one is easy. Glock 19, Remington 1100 my dad gave me, and the 30-30 my grandfather gave me.

Take the one most likely to melt, or the one whose steel frame will be damaged most by the intense heat? Have to think on that for a bit. - john

IF, the house was truly burning, the wife and two dogs are all I care about. Although I realize this is a hypothetical question on a firearms forum, guns are quite possibly the last thing that'd be on my mind if life/limb were in peril due to structure fire.

I don't have any true heirlooms that go bang, so I'd be exfil-ing stuffed animals before weapons if it's just my place burning down. For the purpose of what I'd be least willing to live without, it would probably just be grabbing my double stamp AR, just because replacing/repairing NFA stuff would be a hassle, with not other justification.

As a cat owner, I'd suspect that the cat started the fire.

Early generation 3 G17. Sentimental value.

It's not about risking life and limb. Its about which 1 gun has value (be it sentimental, cost, rarity, or utility) above all others.

I could replace my weapons quicker than I could replace my guitars. But if I'm burning, I don't know if I would try real hard for either. It would have to be pretty small for me to start that line of thinking(removing items from a burning house).

MountainRaven
05-09-14, 22:08
Since I - like many other posters - pretty much almost always have a gun on me, that one is coming with no matter what. So if I'm grabbing a gun, it's probably going to be my AR. And since I'm grabbing my AR, I'm probably grabbing my battle belt, too, which typically has another handgun strapped to it.

So long as I've got a handgun strapped to me, though, I'd probably rather grab my Albion Gallowglass (sword) with custom wood-core, leather-wrapped scabbard and belt.

It would be interesting (probably in a new thread) for some lessons learned after the fire, when you had to replace your firearms and equipment?
