Vickers Tactical held it's forth very successful AK weapon series class this weekend. I would like to thank everybody who attended, you helped to make it an outstanding class.

Please use this thread for class pictures and comments.

Indeed, more to follow. The highlight was shooting the Sturmgewehr 44!

It was my first official AK class and was thoroughly impressed with LAV's instruction.

I should get some pics tomorrow of my new piece, the piston upper from ADC.

I just hit the motel.

Great class, it was a pleasure to meet everybody and see a bunch of repeats from AK class #1.

This class went very well and I think that it was the best class, bang per buck per round, I have taken yet. PEROID!

First, IF YOU WERE IN THE CLASS let me say: CHECK YOURSELF FOR TICKS!!!!!!!!

I just caught one of the bloodsuckers before he could get the well drilled to the vein.

After that:

The class was a mix of calibers with 7.62x39mm rifles making up more than half the wepons on the line. This included two CZ-58's!

That said, the shooters and that caliber would make MT Kalashnikov proud if he were there to bear witness to its efficacy on the walk-back drills.
At 200M and under, this weapons realistic envelope, the caliber perfomed very well using a 100M zero, which Larry emphasizes for this class of rifles.

As someone once said:"The AR is more reliable than you think it is and the AK is more accurate than you think it is."
Truthfully, based on this class and the AR class in February, there wasn't a dime's worth of difference between the two. There were very, very few malfunctions with either (Yes, there were a handful of AK malfs too!) AND PRACTICAL ACCURACY WAS PRETTY MUCH ON PAR ONE FOR THE OTHER.

The differences between the platforms is far, far slimmer than most people think.

Day one started with establishing/confirming our zero, shooting from the prone, sitting (briefly) and kneeling positions. Then we moved to shooting from the standing position at various ranges (up to 25m IIRC) from the target. Before lunch break, we had our first walk-back drill from approx 80M to 180to 200M. I may be mistaken but I think Templar won that one with his CZ-58. I apologise if I am slighting anyone thru omission. Nevertheless, Dinger and Templar gave a very good account of the weapon.

After lunch, we moved into transitions. I once thought I saw Larry heading for his knees in a devine plea for assistance but he refrained and proceeded to pass judgment on out pistolcraft. Larry then interuppted our normal programming for some remedial handgun 101. Dryfire, Ball and Dummy followed by more pistol shooting to help us face down the dreaded El Snatcho Maximo!

Then we moved on to turning and shooting.

TD#1 ended with another walk-back drill.

Training Day two moved on to malfunction drills and transition to the weak side.

One more walkback drill and then everyone got a chance to fire Larry's "Star of Weponology" Sturmghewer MP(STG)-44.
The winners of the previous walkback drills got a whole magazine. Everyone else were provided eight rounds of the rare 7.92x33mm ammo to expend thru Larry's prize possession.

Thanks to Larry once again for bringing this remarkable piece of history for everyone to try!
We moved to shooting on the move, both forward and backwards and then finished with a couple of shooting while moving around obstacles.
IIRC, they were called the serpent and the triangle. These pushed us outside of our comfort level. Larry empahsizes being able to shoot accurately while on the move.

One more walkback drill and a police call finished the day.

Thanks again to Larry and his AI along with Dinger.

I look forward to seeing the rest of you in future LAV classes!

Others will do a more thorough AAR I'm sure.

This AK class was a good one and I enjoyed it more than the inaugural class because I didn't spend the entire class fighting with my equipment this time. The BFG "Victory" sling and universal loop attachment setup that I used worked very well.

Deciding to mount an Aimpoint was also a wonderful idea, and it improved my performance with my VEPR dramatically. I wouldn't have made that 200 yard shot on the last walkback drill (or, frankly, most of the shots that lead to that one shot) if I was using iron sights. The AK, in my opinion, benefits tremendously from the addition of an Aimpoint...even moreso than the AR family of weapons.

That being said, there were a number of guys shooting iron sights that were turning in exceptionally good performance. Having sucked out loud with irons I know that is no easy feat, so my hat is off to them.

Getting some full-auto trigger time on the STMG was wonderful. Mr. Vickers is generous to give his students the ability to shoot a weapon that most have never even seen in person before. In and of itself that experience is worth the price of admission. By the end of the STMG shoot the weapon was literally smoking hot....something that made the gun collector in me cringe. There aren't many people on the planet who will take a weapon like that and hand it to 16 relative strangers along with the ammo to shoot through it.

The course overall was much as I expected it to be. I've trained with Mr. Vickers a couple of other times since the inaugural AK class and I've always learned a great deal and I've benefited tremendously from his instruction. The AK class, like the low light classes, has tremendous repeat value, especially for an individual (like me) who hardly ever fires an AK of any sort. This run through the AK course re-enforced the observations I made in the first course, namely that the AK is a much more capable weapon than 99% of shooters on the planet, and that with enough training just about anyone can learn to run the AK as effectively as the AR. I'm certainly not an expert shooter, but I am better trained and better practiced than most people who are posting on the internet and in the chain of weapon-ammo-shooter, I am the weakest link on every platform I've ever tried.

...leading me to believe that many who opine about the limitations of the AK platform on the internet are...well...out of their lane.

I was also impressed by the VZ-58. The weapon is light, handy, and at least in my hands proved to be very accurate. It's not just any weapon you can pick up for the first time and start ringing a small steel target with off-hand at 200 yards with iron sights....well, at least not for me.

Getting some trigger time on the ADH AR piston system was also nice.

Most weapons ran very well through the course. Big Fat Bertha (my VEPR) didn't experience a single malfunction (that I didn't deliberately induce) through the course, and most other weapons ran similarly well. There was only a single 5.56 AK in the course, and it actually ran fairly well despite an early malfunction. The class was mainly 7.62x39 weapons. A couple had shell casings get lost inside the receiver, gumming up the works. The 5.45 AK's ran well too, but TheKatar's weapon started keyholing something fierce with Wolf 5.45 ammo during today's shooting.

I don't know if he was shooting Wolf yesterday or not, but I didn't notice evidence of keyholing on his target yesterday. It appeared to run just fine with Bulgarian ammo.

General gear lessons:

1. If you want a red dot optic for any serious use or that will potentially be used for any serious purpose, buy an Aimpoint.....ESPECIALLY on an AK, as EOTechs on AK's are uglier than Rosie O'Donnell dry humping Whoopie Goldberg. Aimpoint micros are awesome on AK's with Ultimak rails.

2. If you want an AK that works well, stick to AK's in com-bloc calibers.

3. Always buy AK magazines with steel re-enforced locking tabs and locking lips. The ones without the steel reenforcement are next to worthless.

4. The first thing you do after buying a Glock is replacing the polymer factory sights with something serviceable.

It was nice to see familiar faces and to shoot with folks I hadn't had the pleasure of meeting before.

The sheer volume of information to learn about AK's is staggering. I have absolutely no idea how Templar can keep all that stuff straight. Hearing Templar and the instructors and TheKatar trade comments about some obscure version of an AK magazine made in Uzbekistan (or some similarly god-forsaken place) along with listing all the specifications of the magazine and ranking it on a quality scale is mind blowing. I could never keep all that straight.

I called Heinie and ordered nearly a month ago, it was out of my hands at that point!:D

The two biggest sucks on the AK series are by far the sights and the safety.

Fortunately, there are excellent solutions now available to mitigate both issues.

CHECK YOURSELF FOR TICKS!!!!!!!!

:D

Tics have been terrible this year thanks to the warm winter, they never went away.
I went out in the yard last night and ran a mag through my XD, when I got back in the house I had one crawling up my leg.

Im glad the weather was nice for you guys. Maybe alil warmer than it has been in the last few weeks, but we didnt get the storms they had been forecasting. I did think about you guys when I drove by the range(work) Saturday morning right after the brief rain shower. I had forgotten the class was this weekend til I saw the "sign" out by the road.

We thought we were going to get hammered for a little bit there but it only sprinkled for a few minutes and stopped. Luckily the breeze helped us battle the heat.

I had alot of fun and it was cool meeting/putting faces with screen names. This was my third Vickers class this year, hopefully not the last. I will be back for the next AK class, great class. There were some fine examples of the AK at this class, drool factor was very high. Shooting the star of Weaponology was very cool, big Thanks! to Larry. A big thanks to the AI also, your insight was much appreciated. Even though I knew the platform was capable, I was impressed at the number of guys with and without optics ringing the steel at 150-200 yards with ease offhand. I actually won a walk back drill, I surprised myself.:D

The first thing I want to say is it was great to meet everyone and it was nice to put faces (and real names) with screen names. We had a great group of guys that made the class all that much better. We had everything from LEOs to Military to newbies to knowledgeable AK experts. Clearly a diverse group but there was one thing everyone could agree on; AKs have character, history, and are able to perform far better than some internet celebrities give them credit for.

The majority of us ran 7.62 variants but a few 5.45 and a 5.56 were there as well. I saw everything from Bulgarians, Polish, Yugos, Romys, and some Russian stuff. I think a majority of the major AK builders were represented as well; Chris Bulter (my SLR-107CR), Ted Marshall, Krebs, Mario from Piece of History and I’m sure a few more that I’m forgetting. The bottom line is we were able to see and share bunch of different AKs including two very slick VZ-58s! This AK class was different from all the AR classes that I’ve taken in that there was a lot of history being shared in addition to the shooting that was being taught. We didn’t just learn about how to operator or care for the AK we learned about the origins and the different designs and how they came about. These things have a lot of character and make my AR-15s seem kinds of sterile.

As far as drills go we covered everything from trigger control 101 (which I apparently failed) to malfunction drills (yes even AKs malfunction) to shooting on the move and transitions. We did most of our work between 15-50 yards and too be honest I don’t think I did any worse than I’ve done in other carbine classes running my AR with optics and all the bells and whistles. Larry’s emphasis on accuracy is the reason why.

I did okay on the drills for not having much AK trigger time and for not getting much range time over the past couple years. I would benefit greatly from taking Larry’s Pistol I class and I plan to do just that in September. I sucked ass shooting as a lefty so I’ll have to practice that and I definitely need a boat load of shooting while moving practice. I did manage to win one of the drills and as such won 20 rounds with the MP43 (see below).

I ran my new SLR-107CR than just returned from Chris Bulter at ak-103.com the day before. This is considered a modern AK and sports a 12.5” barrel, a mid-length gas system and a side folding butt stock. I ran iron sights but after seeing several AKs with the Aimpoint T1 I think I’ll give one a try. TheKatar was kind enough to let me test drive his AK-102 which is the same thing as my 107CR but in 5.45 and it’s a slick setup. Using an Ultimak rail, a T1 and a Surefire in one of the new VLTOR light mounts I’d have a modern AK that would be perfectly suited for a primary defense weapon. And I think that’s what it will become! You can run these things hard and do everything with them that you can an AR. They do some things better and they do some things worse but they fast becoming my favorite long gun.

One of the big highlights of the class was when we all got to test drive a Sturmgewehr (MP43). I think everyone enjoyed it and a big thank you goes out to Larry for letting everyone try it. It’s a piece of history and given the fact that it’s 60+ years old it runs like a champ.

The only thing I wasn’t too happy about at the start of the class was the two-stage trigger in my 107. But by lunch time I was used to it and it wasn’t an issue for the rest of the course.

I learned that the AK platform is a very capable platform provided the shooter does his job. It has a ton of history that made me appreciate it even more than before I took the class. I’ll be taking the next AK class but between now and then I’ll be practicing what I learned.

Thanks to Larry, the AI, va_dinger, Templar and all the guys in the class. I had a great time and learned a ton!

I would like to echo what M4arc has said. I've been to two of LAV's classes and for one have been very happy about his instruction. The shooters in the classes have all been great people and are learning alot and are eager to learn as well.

The AK platform is a great performer in my opinion. I think there's alot of bias with it and it's capabilities. When people are using iron sighted AK's making the 150-200 off hand shots on the steel(which don't qoute me, I think is 12x18 "c" zone size) it's doing exactly what you want it to do. In the AR class, there wasn't a stitch of difference on the hit ratio and most had dots and a couple magnified optics.

I learned that they work well(AK and Glock) and that hit ratio wasn't any different with AR's and the AK's under field conditions in the class.

Another great class from LAV and his intrepid A.I. ALL shooters had great attitudes and stayed switched-on, despite the heat/humidity.

Some thoughts:

This was a repeat for many of us, a multiple repeat for a select few.

Once again, trigger control is the key. As some others have stated I see no difference in practical accuracy with shooters using AR platforms - the only thing the AR has on the AK (inside 200m) is the speed of an emergency reload. Past 200m the AR pulls ahead but then we are moving out of the realm of true "tactical" employment.

My understanding of shooting while moving is deepening. It is possible to shoot almost as well as you can static once you learn to break the shot - when the shot is ready.

7.62x39mm dominated this class while 5.56mm dominated the first class last year... this is a combination of the poor reliability of the 5.56mm weapons and the current cost of the ammo. Decent showing by the 5.45mm weapons, which I think is the caliber of choice for the platform.

Possible new data point concerning 12.5" barrel 5.45x39mm platforms and Wolf 60 gr FMJ ammo - my weapon was KH'ing some of this stuff, noticed on TD2. The 16.25" AK-74M clone seemed to shoot it fine, and the 12.5" seemed to run with the Bulgy 53 gr. I need to conduct more testing to see if this hypothesis is valid. Even then, it is only valid for my rifle until we can gather additional data. note: AIM Surplus is now selling tins of Russian 53 gr instead

Otherwise, the AK-105 pattern is a very strong performer, especially coupled with an UltiMAK rail and Micro Aimpoint optic.

If you have a sidefolding stock, rig your Vickers sling so that you can let out enough slack with the slider to switch shoulders without needing to drop your support arm out.

7.62x39mm milled guns are things of beauty. That extra bit of weight helps with this caliber.

The VZ-58's were new to me, and are definitely a carbine to consider for serious use.

usual myths busted:

AK's are inaccurate (they're not)
AK's never malfunction (they do)
AK's don't need cleaned or lubed (they are more robust than AR's but benefit greatly from PM)

Thanks VA_Dinger for your organizational skills and thanks mark5pt56 for bringing the coyote sling.

I had a great time, learned a lot and met some good folks. Key points for me:

Accuracy - What an accurate platform! On the first "don't call it a walkback" drill a lot of us were shooting offhand from the 200 yard mark and making hits. The iron sight crew was very impressive. Some consistent shooting mofo's in that group. Offhand hits at 100 yards on this drill were easily done by everyone. Offhand hits at 100 yards weak side were also done by the majority.

Aimpoint T1 - I admit it, I like the Eotech. I have not had any issues with mine on my AR's. I did not feel the Eotech would be up to the task of sitting out on front of the ultimak so I fetched me a T1. Until this weekend I had only shot an Aimpoint a couple of times and that included zeroing mine last week. I am sold on the T1, very good sight, very likely I will be replacing the Eotechs as I noticed no noticeable speed difference and shit, I hit the steel at 200 with it on a freakin AK, which we all know is more inaccurate than a Tech 9.

Trigger press - Never enough practice with this for my slap happy self. Shooting timed sports sort of gears me to come out of the holster/off the shoulder slapping the "unholy ****" out of the trigger at the sound of the beep. Lesson learned, 20 seconds is a long time for multiple accurate shots, 4 seconds is also a long time for a single accurate shot. But I don't think anybody in the class was faster than me at missing!

AK Safety - I don't have one of the high speed safety's for my gun but did not find it a handicap. Maybe just familiarization but by the end of T1 I felt like I was getting shots off fairly quickly and safety manipulation wasn't an issue, until the last walkback with the VZ58.

Mag changes - I'm going to need to work on this one. I tried to load my AK like a Bren, a Sten, you name it. Good pointers given though and I have good info to work with. I just need to find a "happy zone" in my workspace to seat this thing.

Shoot on the move - If I ever needed another reason to buy one of those GSG-5 .22's this is it. Everytime I shoot on the move feels like the first time, especially when you get retarded and start throwing chairs and patterns n shit into the mix. Good drills to let you know how important it is and that you can make good hits while moving. I thought I was going to throw in a AA gun demo at any time but some how avoided it.

All of the history lessons and the knowledge of the attendees was great. The curriculum was great, the instruction excellent and I liked the pace of the class. This is only the third class I have taken and I was impressed by Larry and the AI's hanging out with everyone, taking the time to discuss things, etc. I truly enjoyed the experience, meeting everyone and the complete lack of a "that guy" unless per chance I was the "that guy" and you ****ers didn't tell me. Seriously though, it was a good group of guys and I look forward to training with all of you again in the future. And to picking up a few new dance steps from LV, the guy has some moves for a white man.

That's a pretty hot light/red dot combo Larry's got on that SLR106. I wondered if a light mounted that way would occlude the Micro. Apparently not. Now all I need is 500 bones for an H1.

Tom, trust me you will love the VZ-58 when you get the chance to actually shoot it. I used my Khyber for about 80% of day II and it worked flawlessly as expected. Most of day I was for the VZ-58 and I ended up being very impressed with it.

NCPatrolAR

It's a Safariland 6325 on a new quick release plate. Translated to English, it is an ALS only (no hood) duty holster on the 1.5" drop UBL. This particular one has a 2" belt slot (vs the standard 2.25" slot) and a new quick release plate so that you can switch out holsters.

Thanks. I greatly prefer the ALS only holsters over the ALS/SLS models. I might have to track one of those down.

It is a very slick set-up.

No more hassling with different set-ups. Just swap out the holster and go. My mag pouches work well enough with most of my handguns (M&P9, HK45, G19).

You know, one thing that I mentioned in the AK class but didn't think too much about, until THIS (https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=14572) thread reminded me was how cool it was to see so many different variants of the AK in one place. It was one of the more interesting aspects of the class in my opinion.

I believe I told va_dinger that it makes the AR seem kind of boring. If you see one Colt6920 with a LaRue rail and an Aimpoint you've seen them all but every single AK in the class was unique. Even the two VZ-58s were interestingly different.

I don't know, I just thought seeing and discussing the different calibers, countries, and variations was pretty cool. It was like part shooting class part history lesson :D
