Optic for 270 pump action?

Hi:

I am pretty new to this forum and am just as new to rifle optics. My brother pulled out his remington 270 pump action and he wants to have some work done on it since it has been idle in the gun case for about 10 years now.

One question was what type of scope would you put on this gun for the purpose of deer hunting, mainly? He has a ca. 2-300$ budget. Your suggestions would be very helpful.

Your brother would be very satisfied with a Leupold VX-2 3-9x40, which is priced just under $300 and is available in a gloss black finish to match the rifle (assuming that like most older Rem pumps, his is high-polish blued).
