Iran recovered a downed U.S. RQ-170 drone back in December, 2011. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran–U.S._RQ-170_incident) The latest news reports (http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Middle-East/2014/0512/A-nightmare-becoming-reality-Iran-unveils-American-drone-replica) have stated that Iran was successful in reverse engineering the drone. If reports are to be believed than they've also been successful in arming the drone with bombing capabilities.

Today, Fars News Agency reported that while Iran’s duplicate of the US RQ-170 Sentinel drone was smaller, it also had a “bombing capability to attack the US warships in any possible battle.” The story in Persian was headlined: “America’s nightmare has become reality.” State television showed footage on Sunday it said was of a US aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf filmed by an Iranian drone.

The drone replica was unveiled at an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) exhibition on Sunday, where Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was briefed on how the drone, its systems, and structure had been reverse-engineered. He called it a “sweet day.”

Why doesn't this fukktard, Hussein just GIVE Iran Nukes. He can ONLY intentionally be setting the US up for a major attack by these musloid lunatic nations. There's no other logical explanation for how retarded he's dealt with these psychos.

The Iranians have also built a Nimitz Class mockup recently, which a Pentagon spokesman says leaves them "unconcerned".

Well, personally I would like to see a flight demonstration before I believe anything they have to say. Plenty of pictures on the internet anyone half decent with fiberglass could mock up in a few weeks. Still it's concerning.

I'd be more worried about the Tomcats they have in inventory.

The Tomcats are mostly deadlined now, plus they never got the top shelf AIM-54's or avionics that we had back in the 70's.

Agree, I'm finding it difficult to absorb anything he posts. I'm currently pricing the likes of which for the wife. The gift that keeps on giving.

Oh and sucks about the drone...good thing is those knuckleheads will crash it while trying to skywatch sheep sex for jollies.

I'm thinking they probably got a bit of help from either the Russians, or the Chinese, if in fact it's an operable drone.

Maybe their fake drone is going to launch from their fake aircraft carrier.

Just sayin'...

 fake drone, parked on fake aircraft carrier, docked in a fake port in a fake city....

Don't forget their fake stealth fighter!

"“It seems their fiberglass work has improved a lot,” an industry source familiar with the RQ-170 told US Naval Institute News. “It also seems that if it were a functional copy, versus a detailed replica, it wouldn’t necessarily have the exact same landing gear, tires, etc. They would probably just use whatever extra F-5 parts or general aviation parts they had lying around."

Interesting… I hope they're right.

The thing about drones is that they require a HUGE amount of infrastructure.

With, say, their F-14s, they needed to create from scratch a large amount of replacement parts and new avionics once America stopped supplying them and cut off sales. Along with the physical parts required to keep an aircraft in the air, they need a large maintenance crew, a training pipeline for new maintenance crew, and a training pipeline for new pilots. Those require facilities and investment as well.

Now take drones. Say Iran recovered a 100% complete and intact drone. They still need to create, from scratch, a ground control station to interface with the drone. They need a satellite constellation to relay commands to the drone beyond visual range. They need to either reverse engineer all the software on the drone to make their comms compatible with it, or else create it from scratch. They need to do the same with the crypto.

It's honestly better and cheaper to create a drone program from the ground up than it would be to reverse engineer a captured drone and create a new program around it. You can take inspiration from a captured drone, but making an exact copy isn't a good idea at all.

If Iran successfully created a functional replica, I'd expect to see a similar but definitely different design, much like how the F-35 data was stolen and China created the J-31, which looks similar but isn't exactly the same because the Chinese engineers understand a thing or two about aerospace engineering and changed the design to suit their particular needs (production realities/capabilities, mission requirements, etc).
